Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Field Engineer is responsible for managing the field logistics and updating company Project Managers and Contractors to ensure projects comply with all engineering standards, codes, and specifications. This position works with Project Managers and Superintendents to provide direction and support in managing operations, overseeing job logistics, and generating reports for division leaders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Management & Coordination

  • Manages PlanGrid and Heavy Job for project work accuracy, monitoring project costs to stay within budget.
  • Proactively works with Project Management, Field Supervisory, and Client teams to identify and analyze potential risks and impacts to the project schedule.
  • Tracks production to produce project activity profiles.
  • Assists with job site duties to keep job site facilities functioning correctly.

Contracts, Invoices & Budgeting

  • Prepares, reviews, and approves supplier purchase orders.
  • Understands owner contract and subcontract documents to determine inclusions/exclusions for invoice payment.
  • Validates, reconciles, and maintains accurate quantities for billing purposes and communicates differences to project management.
  • Prepares change orders, manages trucking logs, and approves invoices.

Permits & Regulatory Compliance

  • Identifies, completes, and applies for local permits.
  • Performs on-site safety observations.
  • Develops and oversees job site-specific requirements relating to safety, site cleanliness, and delivery schedules.
  • Assists in producing and processing project deliverables such as Safety and QA/QC plans and test procedures.
  • Submittals, RFIs & Documentation
  • Produces drafts, manages, and maintains project submittal/RFI logs for the lead project manager.
  • Organizes and ensures proper documentation and drawing distribution to staff and field personnel.

Meetings & Communication

  • Schedules, facilitates, and manages Gopher 1 tickets.
  • Schedules and leads private utility meetings and documents conversations to communicate with office personnel.
  • Attends meetings as required with clients, owners, and project teams.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, landowners, and suppliers.

Subcontractor & Supplier Management

  • Assists in drafting subcontractor/P.O. agreements and ensures all subcontract agreements are finalized before work begins.
  • Plans and coordinates engineering deliverables from various parties.

Estimating & Business Development

  • Assists with estimating duties, including but not limited to take-offs, solicitations to subcontractors/suppliers, bid and quote preparation, and bid running.
  • Participates in business development events.

General Support

  • Ability to independently perform tasks assigned with instructions as to the expected general results.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned by management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Associate degree or higher in construction management, engineering or related field with 0-2 years' experience or 4+ years of equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to work with field concepts and work in the office.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective communication (oral, written, presentation, listening) with internal and external customers
  • Effective motivational and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, mean, median, and averages.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment with a can-do attitude.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field; 1-3 years of experience in estimating and managing projects in a related scope of work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience using construction software is a plus.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans and specifications.

OTHER:

  • Must be able to pass all pre-employment drug test and background checks.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).
  • Requires 8 to 10-hour workdays, Monday - Friday.
  • Travel requirement is 80% to job sites within the Midwest.
  • This is a Safety Sensitive Role.

  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and subcontractors, exchanging accurate information verbally and in writing.
  • Stand, walk, and navigate active construction sites, including uneven terrain, for extended periods (50%+). Use a computer/laptop in an office environment with natural and/or fluorescent lighting. Navigate between office building floors. Regularly attend off-site meetings or events.
  • Lift to 35 lbs. unassisted.
  • Climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding and access confined or elevated spaces as needed.
  • Utilize a computer, tablet, or mobile device with natural and/or fluorescent lighting in office and field environments.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and high-visibility vests as job site safety regulations require.
  • Travel frequently to job sites, client meetings, or other project-related locations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here represent those that employees may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Most often, it is an office environment; however, occasional jobsite travel is required. Employee frequently works alone and with others. The employee may occasionally encounter high noise levels when visiting jobsites, but hearing protection is provided/required. Most often in a typical office environment
