The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Emergency Department (ED) at UVA Health is an integral member of a dynamic, expanding emergency medicine team. This role supports high-quality, patient-centered care across multiple clinical environments, including the Main Emergency Department, ED Observation Unit, and Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) area. The APP will practice in a fast-paced academic medical center with progressive autonomy, practicing at the top of licensure and scope while collaborating closely with attending physicians, residents, nursing, and interprofessional team members.
The APP will rotate through days, nights, weekends, and holidays, with shift lengths varying based on the specific clinical assignment. This position is well-suited for an APP who thrives in a complex environment, values flexibility, seeks procedural exposure, and demonstrates intellectual curiosity and commitment to lifelong learning. The APP will be welcomed into UVA's Center for Advanced Practice, the professional home for APPs across the health system, and will work under the direct clinical oversight of the UVA School of Medicine's Department of Emergency Medicine, which oversees the ED's medical practice. Preferred Qualifications - * Prior emergency medicine or urgent care experience in a high-acuity, high-volume setting, including exposure to rapid assessment models and observation medicine. * Demonstrated procedural experience or strong interest in procedural skill development, such as laceration repair, splinting, point-of-care ultrasound, airway support, or vascular access, consistent with scope and credentialing. * Experience working in an academic medical center or teaching environment, with comfort collaborating alongside residents, fellows, and medical students. * Strong adaptability and clinical judgment in fast-paced, evolving care environments, with the ability to manage multiple patients and transition effectively between clinical roles (Main ED, RME, Observation). * Commitment to professional growth and team engagement, including participation in continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, or departmental projects through the Center for Advanced Practice or Department of Emergency Medicine. Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree. Experience: Department and unit specific. Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. The starting base rate for this role is $115,793.60 annually.
