The Safety & Security Department works to foster and support a Safety and Security Culture that identifies risks to the operation and workplace and proactively deals with these issues before they become injuries, accidents or incidents. The Safety Programs Intern will regularly interact with various Safety & Security teams including Environmental, Hazardous Materials, Safety Investigations, Internal Evaluation Program, Workers Compensation and Safety Communications.

Additional Details

  • Join Southwest as a Summer 2026 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from May 19 - August 7, 2026.

  • Pay of $21-$23 per hour, corresponding with progress toward degree

  • Stipends may be offered based on eligibility and program criteria

Due to the nature of this role, you would be required to work from our Dallas, TX headquarters facility during business hours (2702 Love Field Drive).

  • Dedicate 40 hours each week (maximum of 8 hours per day) to your internship responsibilities and tasks.

  • Receive free, unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel).

  • Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. required and no current or future work authorization sponsorship available.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of Safety Programs Intern may include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing Safety programs that align with applicable regulations and standards (OSHA, NFPA,FDAetc.)

  • Researching regulations and interpretations and applying them to the Southwest programs,policiesand procedures

  • Creating Safety and Security-related communication pieces to be distributed companywide

  • Performing gap analyses between current programs and new or updated regulations or standards

  • Researching and gathering information for regulatory requirements

  • Supporting a wide variety of Safety and Security programs; including, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, fall protection, fire safety, electrical safety, chemical management, communicable disease, hot work, industrial hygiene, lockout/tagout and Hazardous Materials programs

  • Interfacing with all other departments and working groups on various projects and issues

  • Other projects and tasks as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiencywith Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPointrequired

  • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive company information

  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detailsrequired

  • Must be able tocomply withCompany attendance standards as described in established guidelines

  • Ability to work well with others as part of a Team

  • Must be able to lift and/or move items of 25 pounds and/or more on a periodic basis.

  • Must be able to climb, bend, kneel,crawland stoop on a periodic basis.

  • Ability to Travel as needed

  • Participate in Operations throughout the network in all applicable areas (such as the ramp)

Education:

  • Progress toward a degree, major, or minor inOccupational Safety, Safety Sciences, Aviation Safety, Industrial Hygiene, EmergencyResponseor similar degreerequired.

  • Progress towards a 4-year undergraduate degree preferred

  • To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your

  • university) at the time of application and during the internship

  • 1-2 semestersremainingat the time the internship endsispreferred

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process

Experience:

  • Preferred:Related Safety experience or knowledge preferred (i.e.previousinternship or work experience)

  • Preferred:Experience with or knowledge of aviation operations

  • Preferred:Technical writing skills or experience

  • Preferred:ExperienceParticipation in industry related organizations and clubs

  • Preferred:Familiarity with government regulations
