Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Estimator is responsible for developing project cost estimates for mechanical trades to include equipment, equipment setting, structural steel installation, piping, and ductwork, to support estimates for complete EPC and Bid-build projects and present them to senior management. This will require a thorough knowledge of the scope of project being performed including multiple trades, the ability to do quantity take-offs from the available documents and provide guidance to enter those into a standardized database. The estimates will need to be organized to meet the Company's and clients' expected structure. The ideal candidate will have good organization and communication skills for estimate presentations internally and externally.

Essential Functions



  • Actively supports the Company's commitment to safety and its "Core Values."

  • Understanding of the operating process at the facilities being estimated such as refineries, terminals, power plants, or other heavy industrial facilities.
  • Ability to prepare conceptual as well as definitive cost estimates.
  • Read and ability to take off all types of construction drawings including isometric, orthographic, and plan drawings into standard commodities.
  • Have the ability to navigate 3D models in different programs such as Navisworks, Bentlyview, or Smart Plant.
  • Discerns take-off elements of the work accurately and assign them to the appropriate items in the database, make recommendations about how to change the standard database items to reflect field conditions more closely. Must have a strong attention to detail.
  • Identify deficiencies in the drawings and ability to define estimated scope through use of clarifications.
  • Develops quantity-based estimates from partial information, including generating pipe take-offs from plot plans and P&ID. Ability to create isometric sketches for estimating purposes a plus.
  • Understand the sequence and steps involved in setting large equipment such as gas turbines, large pumps, furnaces, and vessels.
  • Monitors and coordinates the scope of the project with electrical and civil disciplines to ensure that all trades have been coordinated and a complete project is being offered.
  • Ensure that estimates are generated in a way that allows take-offs and pricing to be traced directly back to a defining document.
  • Prepares bridging documents demonstrating an understanding of how historical estimated costs have changed from previous estimates.
  • Participates in constructability reviews and cost saving enhancement discussions for constructability assessments, e.g., installation access, manlifts, scaffolding, cranes, etc.
  • Organizes the estimate in a manner required to meet the needs of the project. Understand owner bid summaries and be able to adjust takeoffs to accommodate estimate summary breakdowns.
  • Estimates the requirements for craft support labor, non-manual staff, construction equipment, and temporary facilities based on analyzing crew sizes for each direct craft.
  • Develop preliminary lifting plans and select appropriate cranes and other equipment to perform the work.
  • Understand work sequence and assist in the development of execution plans and resource loaded schedules.
  • Understands the principals of project cash flow.
  • Develops risk ranging analysis for elements of the project and uses that to assign contingency.
  • Solicit subcontract and vendor pricing utilize uniform corporate structure.
  • Prepare formal bid evaluations for management reviews including an internal fair cost estimate.
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and capable of working independently.
  • Other duties, as assigned.


              Qualifications



              • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education/experience in lieu of degree.
              • 7+ years of appropriate field and/or office experience with a Minimum of 4 years' experience as an estimator or a field engineer involved with estimating or cost monitoring.
              • Strong background in piping estimating a plus.
              • Have the ability to quickly visualize the finished product from the drawings and other documents provided.
              • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and capable of working independently. Good basic mathematical comprehension.
              • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to make clear and concise presentations to senior management.
              • Solid technical skills with an understanding of the various classifications of estimates and the purpose for which they are intended.
              • Self-motivated enthusiastic collaborator willing to work with others and adopt innovative ideas and methods.
              • Solid computer skills including an operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Sage estimating, Accubid, project scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera) and databases will be an advantage.
              • This position may require occasional travel and extended workdays.
