The Ball State University Digital Corps is an on-campus creative agency powered by students. As part of the IT family, our primary goal is to serve as a catalyst to the campus community using technology in creative, innovative, and immersive directions to advance the goals of the University. The role of Developer is a one-of-a-kind position that combines the best of IT support and development focused on emerging AI technologies with the altruistic aims of empowering students to learn, grow, and succeed in their creative disciplines. Ideal candidates will have a shared passion for student success, empowerment, and engagement. Part teacher, part mentor, part techie... this position requires face-to-face work with undergraduate students and hands-on work with myriad AI development projects across campus. The AI landscape is rapidly evolving, and this Developer role is positioned to actively help guide Ball State's efforts with the new technology.
*Interaction with Ball State students is crucial in this role, so the position is in person and on campus.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

As a key member of the Digital Corps, this position will drive the integration of artificial intelligence across the university by designing, building, and deploying full-stack applications that support both academic and administrative goals. Daily work will involve collaborating with campus partners to analyze data and monitor system performance, ensuring all AI initiatives provide actionable insights and remain technically robust. By staying current with emerging industry trends and cloud services, this position will help maintain a cutting-edge technology stack while supporting the entire project lifecycle from initial concept to long-term maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Collaborate with internal and external partners to design, develop, and deploy artificial intelligence applications across campus, including academic and administrative uses.

2. Maintain a robust, ongoing knowledge of artificial intelligence trends to make informed recommendations on Ball State's AI deployment.

3. Work with campus partners to analyze data sets and analytics using AI to make recommendations for campus initiatives.

4. Support the testing, debugging, and deployment of new AI models and applications, including building full-stack applications and APIs that integrate with AWS and GCP services.

5. Work with others within the Division of Information Technology to evaluate new and emerging development software, workflows, and other industry trends to maintain the Digital Corps' mission to remain at the forefront of AI technology.

6. Monitor the performance and analytics of deployed AI systems and provide key insights to campus stakeholders.

7. In collaboration with the Digital Corps Development Team Lead, assist in the Digital Corps development process by implementing standard technology stacks based on the needs of the project, and play an active role in all development projects from idea to delivery.

8. Provide support and upkeep to legacy development projects as requested by Digital Corps campus partners.

9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university by the date of appointment. Or, in lieu of a Bachelor's degree:

  • Associate's degree plus an additional combination of education or experience in computer science equivalent to two years. Or, in lieu of an Associate's degree:

  • High school diploma or GED plus an additional combination of education or experience in computer science equivalent to four years.

  • At least two years of full-stack web development experience. Knowledge of TypeScript, HTML/CSS, Git, React, and relational databases. AWS API Gateway, S3, basic ECS experience, and general experience with Vertex AI or similar cloud AI services. Demonstrated experience with large language models and AI deployment.

  • Crucial soft skills - like time management, collaboration, and creativity - are highly valued. Communication skills, problem-solving, and adaptability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with deployment strategies for projects, including AI, that utilize cloud services like AWS(API Gateway, S3, ECS) and GCP (Cloud Run, Vertex AI).

  • Demonstrated experience with AI deployment in higher education
