Primary Purpose of Department
The School of Professional Studies ( SPS) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, under the leadership of the Associate Provost. The School of Professional Studies works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success, and faculty effectiveness in teaching.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director, Online Student Success is a strategic leadership role within the School of Professional Studies at UNC Charlotte that serves as the primary academic advisor for students in the BS in Professional Studies ( PROS) program and supervises a team of program and student support specialists who provide coordinated student success services to support Charlotte Online and noncredit learners. This position will function as a specialized integrator with campus units such as the Office of Undergraduate Education, University College, Enrollment Management, and Student Assistance, Student Assistance and Support Services, and academic advising leaders, and academic college partners to strengthen academic pathways and student onboarding, guide online student progression initiatives, and facilitate proactive care plans for retention and intervention strategies for Charlotte Online students. In partnership with the Associate Director for Enrollment Management, the role will also support readmission initiatives and outreach to "eligible but not enrolled" students. The role may include occasional evening advising during peak registration periods.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Provide primary academic advising and manage care network for students in the BS in Professional Studies program and model best practices for adult online learners.
  • Supervise program and student support specialists serving Charlotte Online and noncredit learners.
  • Lead institution-wide coordination of proactive student success strategies-strengthening early-alert processes, aligning care plans, supporting retention and persistence initiatives, and guiding outreach to at-risk, disengaged, or "eligible but not enrolled" students in partnership with existing departments.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Undergraduate Education, University College, Enrollment Management, Student Assistance and Support Services, and academic departments to enhance online student pathways, onboarding, and progression.
  • Conduct data-informed segmentation and targeted communication strategies to address the unique needs of online and post-traditional learners.
  • Offer occasional evening advising during peak periods to support working adult learners.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Requires a minimum of a Master's degree
  • 3 years of experience in academic advising, student services, and/or higher education administration.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Services, or a related field, with prior teaching experience in higher education, particularly in professional studies or related areas.
  • Knowledge of advising technologies, student data systems, and enrollment management processes, with a strong understanding of student retention strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and leading teams, with an emphasis on mentorship and professional development.
  • Experience working with online and post-traditional student populations and supporting their unique needs.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and collaboration skills, with a high level of attention to detail and ability to work effectively across departments.
