The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an archaeologist to join our growing cultural resources management practice. This hybrid role can be based at Barr offices in the Four Corners or Intermountain West regions of the United States. Responsibilities include fieldwork, reporting, and task management across a variety of projects. Our program offers a full range of services, including cultural surveys, testing, data recovery, construction monitoring, built environment documentation, cultural report preparation, and internal review to support project compliance with local, state, and federal antiquities laws.

A successful candidate in this role is passionate about fieldwork while also eager to expand their skills in areas like report writing and project support. They are intrinsically motivated, client-focused, and able to balance competing priorities while working independently and collaboratively.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Fieldwork: conduct fieldwork by identifying artifacts, cultural features, and site boundaries during surveys and monitoring, collaborate with team members throughout the field session, assist with site recording using ArcGIS Field Maps, and help ensure equipment is prepared and maintained before and after fieldwork.

  • Report writing: complete field site forms and written reports.

  • Task management: oversee and coordinate project tasks to help ensure timely and high-quality delivery.

  • Collaboration: build and maintain strong internal relationships and support client engagement.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based at Barr's offices located in Albuquerque or Farmington, New Mexico; or Durango, Colorado.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project and team needs (50%-70% travel; needs will vary seasonally and over time).

  • Work environment: applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction, industrial, and remote work sites. Some work locations may also feature steep slopes and dense vegetation.An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided.Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Physical requirements: this role requires long durations of time spent standing and walking. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree from an accredited college in archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or a related field.

  • Experience:

    • 2 or more years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM); a master's degree may substitute for some experience.

    • Understanding of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and other local, state, and federal regulations regarding cultural resources.

    • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.

  • Software: experience using MS Office suite (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook), Field Maps, and cultural resource databases.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Work authorization: must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Experience leading and supporting crews on Section 106-related field projects.

  • Ability to obtain required permits to perform archaeological and/or architectural surveys on federal, state, tribal, local, and public land.

  • Experience working in a consulting environment.

  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $58,000-$73,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
