This position is seeking an experimental Postdoctoral Research Associate to do research on the the heterogenous catalysis of Gas-to-Liquids in the direct conversion of Methane in the Catalysis: Reactivity and Structure Group in the Chemistry Division at BNL. A successful candidate will lead the study of methane activation and transformation into liquid products, with specific focus on kinetics and spectroscopy of flow reactions, collaborating closely with scientists from the National Synchrotron Light Source II. A multimodal kinetic and spectroscopic approach will be applied to unravel the active state of the catalyst and identifying the relevant reaction mechanisms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and demonstrate a new experimental flow reactor to advance efforts in gas-to-liquids fundamental understanding and augment existing batch reactor chemistry
  • Collaborate with large interdisciplinary and international teams that utilize X-ray methods under operando conditions.
  • Collect and analyze data, present findings at national conferences, and write manuscripts summarizing their findings

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D., or Ph.D. equivalent, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or a closely related field
  • Expertise in heterogeneous catalytic systems (thermal-, electro-, or photo-catalytic)
  • Proven record of published work and strong communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Background in spectroscopic techniques, including Infrared Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy, NMR, and Synchrotron based characterization
  • Knowledge of the Gas-Liquid-Solid interlayer as applied to catalytic systems
  • Combinatorial Experimental Frameworks (Design of Experiments)
  • Expertise in batch and flow style chemical reactors

Other Information:

  • On-site work only, ability to travel domestically/internationally as needed
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $75,000 - $83,000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
