Job Summary

The Associate Director, STEP Success oversees the Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway (STEP) Team. Develops and implements university-wide initiatives that promote retention, re-enrollment, and timely graduation of students admitted through the various STEP pathways. Collaborates with unit leadership to design targeted interventions for at-risk students, overseeing project implementation and evaluation. The Associate Director uses data to implement and evaluate projects, and closely monitors the retention and progression of the STEP population. Fosters partnerships with student support units and provides data-driven insights to improve student success.

  • Leads a team of STEP Success Specialists who implement targeted projects to promote retention/re-enrollment, and progression to timely graduation, of students admitted through the Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway (STEP).
  • Collaborates with unit leadership to design targeted interventions for the STEP population and maintains a calendar of these initiatives for the STEP Success Team.
  • Works to meet or exceed the university's retention and graduation goals through closely monitoring the re-enrollment and progression of students in their assigned populations.. And implements appropriate interventions.
  • Coordinates data from various platforms to identify when students miss critical course milestones, and generates accurate and comprehensive lists of students for outreach.
  • Develops and implements systems for tracking and evaluating the team's initiatives. Prepares reports summarizing student success initiatives and interventions, including summary of impacts and findings.
  • Keeps detailed records of the team's projects. Regularly analyzes and reports on the impact of the projects. Reviews and updates strategy with unit leadership, based on impact data.
  • Advises and makes recommendations on academic goals and policies related to the Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway.
  • Develops communication plans and/or reviews communications designed for students in the STEP pathways.
  • Directly supervises a team of STEP Success Specialists, including but not limited to, overseeing hiring, coordinating relevant training and ongoing professional development, establishing internal processes and best practices, and conducting performance
  • evaluations.
  • Meets regularly with STEP Success Specialists to assign projects. Manages the implementation of those projects and ensures that detailed and accurate records are documented and maintained.
  • Assists with student issues escalated by the STEP Success Specialists, as well as other sensitive cases, as needed.
  • Develops partnerships with the academic units and other student support units, including but not limited to Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Office of Scholarships, Student Financials, and Registrar. Ensures coordination between central and local outreach efforts.
  • Performs other related duties may be assigned. The omission of related duties does preclude the supervisor from assigning them.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and four (4) years of experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience working as an academic advising and/or other student service experience.
  • Experience leading or supervising teams and fostering effective collaboration.
