About the Department and/or College

The Anthropology Division portion of the internship focuses on the care, management, and preparation for exhibition of lithic objects from the Archaeological Collection and textiles from the Ethnology Collection. The Intern may also assist with the identification and resolution of found-in-collections objects in both collections, and with inventory issue resolution. The Intern is expected to be knowledgeable in collections management, the ethics, legal issues, and best practices in governing anthropological collections.

The Heritage Education portion of the internship provides practical training and experience in interpretation and informal education practices in all aspects of public interpretation including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.

The Heritage Management portion of the internship provides practical training and experience in managing a heritage facility, including the visitor experience, outdoor grounds maintenance and security, and natural history activities

Major/Essential Functions


  • Perform relocation inventories for collections objects being moved for exhibit.
  • Assist with photography for all objects being exhibited.
  • Assess objects for the rigors of exhibition and create detailed condition reports.
  • Coordinate In-House Loan documentation with Division staff and the Museum Registrar.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of public programming initiatives including tours and outreach programs.
  • Welcome visitors to the Lubbock Lake Landmark and maintain visitor logs.
  • Aid in visitor surveys and natural history surveys.
  • Aid in preservation of the Lubbock Lake Landmark through landscape, trails, and fence line maintenance activities.
  • This position requires a moderate level of physical activity. The employee must be physically able to:
    • Sit, stand, and walk throughout the facility (including trails) for extended periods of time.
    • Set up and move tables and chairs.
    • Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
    • Handle and transport fragile items, including large textiles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Understanding of and familiarity with informal education and interactive teaching theory and methods.
  • Ability to work on diverse tasks, seeking help when needed.
  • Self-motivation to achieve goals and complete projects individually and with groups.
  • Computer proficiency: Mac and PC, Office 365, and FileMaker Pro.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent. No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience using best practices in collections management.
  • Experience with museum registration procedures.
