UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.


Course / Program Description

The landscape architecture certificate program offers students the opportunity to learn from highly qualified practitioners passionate about teaching.

The landscape architecture program is looking for a qualified and experienced hybrid course instructor, ideally based in southern CA, and that has an in-depth knowledge of landscape architecture and the design profession.


Job Description

This job description is for a hand drafting and drawing instructor in the landscape architecture certificate program, specifically for course Arch X 472.4D Design Graphics 1:Drafting and Drawing of the Built Environment

As well as current topic electives.

Course structure: UCLA Extension is on the quarter system. Each course is typically 11 weeks. Class meetings are once a week for 11 weeks. Nine (9) of those meetings typically meet via Zoom in a synchronous remote format. We schedule these class meetings in the evenings and during the week, typically from 7-10 p.m. The other two (2) class meetings are face-to-face in Santa Monica; at the course project site The in-person meetings are scheduled on weekends; Saturday and/or Sunday.


Instructor Duties:

* Develop and/or update course syllabi and modules in consultation with the Landscape Architecture Program Director.

* Prepare and deliver course materials and learning assessments with clearly defined instructions and rubrics.

* Utilize Canvas, an online learning management system, as a required course delivery platform in online, in-person and hybrid courses. Required.

* Communicate course objectives and specific learning outcomes to students and review the grading policies of the course.

* Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes and assign grades. Create clear grading rubrics for each assignment.

* Post final student grades no later than two (2) weeks after the last class meeting. * Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner. (within 24-48hrs)

* Communicate with Program Director and Program Manager regarding any student or classroom issues as soon as they occur.

* Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of Landscape Architecture.

* Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner, including all new hire paperwork, updated syllabus every quarter, accept quarterly hire contract, submit required textbook orders, complete University mandated trainings (sexual harassment prevention, cyber security, Canvas etc.), and communicate classroom needs to the appropriate program staff member.

* Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs.

* Attend instructor meetings and program events.

* Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom inclusive of both domestic and international student populations.

* Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning

* Implement inclusive teaching strategies that engage learners from various backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experience levels to achieve equity in learning outcomes.

* Respond to student inquiries about final grades, consult with Program Director as needed.

* Maintain a record of all final grades for up to 13 months.

Special Conditions of Employment

Instructor total compensation for a 4-unit course is $2,706. ( Compensation varies with unit valuation and instructional hours associated with each course.

Additional benefits include UCLA Library and JSTOR access, one free class per class taught, one year of teaching experience (4 total quarters) can be applied to licensure experience requirement in California, an educational email address, academic discounts at the campus store, and access to the University Credit Union.

Instructors are hired quarterly and on an as-needed basis.

Interviews are scheduled with qualified applicants who can fill anticipated openings.

Because Extension is a division within UCLA, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved by University and California Academic Senate regulations. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are "by agreement." The Instructor's Contract outlines course deliverables, the course schedule, and compensation terms, subject to Extension policies and procedures. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hiring an instructor until it has received an accepted Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be canceled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, are void. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent on course preparation or other events.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

* BLA, BSLA, MLA, MSLA, or Landscape Architecture Certificate graduate with a current license, required. We will consider a Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture with a current license.

* Preference given to candidates with a current landscape architect license.

* Must be committed to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.

* Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information in multiple ways

* Outstanding interpersonal communication skills.

* Active affiliation and participation in relevant professional associations encouraged

Preferred qualifications

* College-level teaching experience in landscape architecture or design highly preferred.

* Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance highly preferred.

* Proficiency in, or willingness to learn and use, instructional technology and online teaching tools, Canvas, Zoom, Concept board, PowerPoint, etc. highly preferred
