Job Summary

Works primarily in the VMTH which receives approximately 200 cases a year that have hip disease needing surgery. Performs all SA orthopedic procedures as well as resident, and student training in orthopedics. Provides on call back up for residents that is shared between all faculty and fellows. The fellowship includes time for attendance of weekly orthopedic rounds, time for research and other academic pursuits. May also include rounds at the UC Davis Medical Center and JRS fellowship rounds virtually with other fellows. Will be responsible for one manuscript describing a JRS-related research project required for completion of the Fellowship.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Licensed DVM in the State of California.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of an ACVS Small Animal Surgery residency.
  • No minimum work experience required.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills and professionalism with animals and clinical team members.
  • Competent in maintaining animal health records, including both manual and computerized health data.
  • Competent in evaluating animals and monitoring animal health on experimental protocol.
  • Ability to perform full range of clinical veterinary care including preventative medicine and general medicine and dentistry, emergency medicine, intensive neonatal care, surgery, radiology, ultrasound, pharmacology, anesthesia, and endoscopy.
  • Competent understanding to be able to perform examinations, complete analyses, order X-rays, discuss special diets, and write prescriptions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interpersonal communication skills to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

  • 75% - Small Animal Orthopedic / Total Joint Care receiving and Consulting / Clinical Teaching
  • 20% - Research and Study
  • 5% - External Rotations / Conferences at the UC Davis Medical Center or Other JRS Fellowship Programs

Department Overview

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment
