About the Opportunity:

Washington County Animal Services is seekingan Animal Shelter Technician.

Our Animal Shelter Technicians receive, feed, and care for animals. In this role, you will administer vaccinations as well as a variety of medications prescribed by the shelter veterinarian. You will also maintain daily animal records, work collaboratively with non-profit rescue groups to facilitate transfers of adoptable pets, and assist the public in a multitude of ways including but not limited to reuniting lost pets with their families. Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Receives dogs and cats brought to the shelter. Weighs, examines and observes animals to detect signs of illness, disease, or injury. Places animals in kennels and maintains impounding records using the computer system.

  • Prepares food and feeds animals according to the schedules and feeding instructions. Provides drinking water for animals in the animal shelter.

  • Performs basic animal grooming duties, such as washing, brushing, and trimming nails.

  • Cleans and organizes Animal Shelter facilities, including cleaning and disinfecting shelter kennels and floors, organizing shelter equipment, doing laundry, and washing dishes.

  • Responds to questions and inquiries from customers regarding the care of animals.

  • Provides assistance to pet owners during the redemption process of their pet(s).

  • Performs humane euthanasia. Removes and properly disposes of deceased animals. Maintains euthanasia records and records of used controlled substances.

  • Maintains records on animals such as size, weight, physical condition, feedings, treatments, medications, and provided care.

  • Handles, controls, examines, and administers routine vaccinations and/or oral medications.

  • Maintains shelter records and notes medical problems of animals using a computer system. Notifies supervisor of supply or equipment needs.

  • Through observation and interaction with animals at the shelter and in accordance with established guidelines and protocols, completes behavioral assessments on animals to help determine their social needs and abilities in interacting with other animals and with people of various age groups.

Work Schedule: Due to the nature of the duties, no remote work is eligible. Also, to meet the 365 days of the year-round operational needs in this work group, the Animal Shelter Technicians work on the weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Animal Shelter Technician II (Pay Range: $24.77 - $29.96/hour):

  • Two (2) years of professional experience in the care, handling, or training of animals in a kennel, veterinary office, animal clinic, or related setting.
    OR

  • One (1) year of professional experience in the care, handling, or training of animals in a kennel, veterinary office, animal clinic, or related setting;AND Completion of at least one (1) year of technical training in veterinary assistance or a related program.

Animal Shelter Technician I (Pay Range: $21.24 - $25/84/hour):

  • One (1) year of professional experience in the care, handling, or training of animals in a kennel, veterinary office, animal clinic, or related setting;
    OR

  • Completion of at least one (1) year of technical training in veterinary assistance or a related program may substitute for the required experience.

ADDITIONAL LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, PHYSICAL ABILITIES AND SPECIALTY REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires the possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record per Washington County policy:Driver's License & Records Policy-Vehicles.

  • Certification as a Euthanasia Technician is required within six (6) months of appointment.

  • Successful completion of a background check.

7. Post-Offer Check:The final candidate requires to successfully clear a third-party background check, driving record check, and physical abilities test including medical and drug screening as pre-employment conditions.

8. Start Date:A start date will be determined after all pre-employment condition(s) have been met.
