HED | IDEAS - Mechanical Engineering Intern

HED | IDEAS (Intern Development for Engineering and Architecture Students) is an approximate 10-week program that provides aspiring A/E professionals with real-world work experience that introduces them to the many diverse components of an A/E firm. The experience is intended to complement and support their academic learning experience.

Interns contribute to one or more of HED's nine market sectors. Project work exposure can vary, from planning and concept development, through design and production and construction administration. Interns also attend a series of workshops that provide introductions to the intricacies of integrated practice, project management, programming, business development and marketing, all crucial to the successful operations of an A/E firm.

Interns at HED harness their critical thinking skills, enthusiasm, innovation, passion, energy, and curiosity to make a positive impact through design excellence and contributing to making the world a better place. Position Summary The Mechanical Intern supports the project team by assisting with design tasks and learning the fundamentals of the mechanical design process in a professional environment. Interns gain hands-on experience working with modeling software, understanding engineering principles, and participating in real project work under direct supervision. This role provides a foundation for a future career in building systems design and encourages learning through mentorship.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform basic Revit mechanical system modeling and documentation tasks.
  • Learn to follow redlines and apply revisions.
  • Support project teams in minor documentation tasks related to mechanical systems.
  • Attend internal team meetings and shadow senior staff.
  • Observe and support mechanical calculations and design setups.
  • Manage drawing files and file organization.
  • Assistwith research or administrativetasks asassigned.
  • Learning and completing system sizing calculations - such as ductwork/pipe sizing, load modeling, and ventilation calculations - under the guidance of the project designer/lead
  • Participate in mentorship relationships with lead engineers to understand the "how" and "why" of mechanical engineering for the built environment
  • Learn how to design, layout, and coordinate mechanical equipment within a building

Requirements

  • Must be at or willing to go to one of the locations listed for the position.
  • Enrolled in Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position required.
  • Strong organizational skills preferred.
  • Revit experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with computers, specifically for word processing, spreadsheet use/creation and email required.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious personalities required.
  • Ability to work well with others under deadline situations required

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
