The Fuel Cycle Analysis (FCA) Group seeks applicants to perform analysis and research in support of nuclear non-proliferation efforts, including nuclear material security and nuclear forensic analysis. The applicant will be responsible for analyzing information, producing written products, and briefing material to peers, management, and sponsors. The FCA Group operates under the Field Intelligence Operations Division within the National Security Sciences Directorate at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Produce peer-reviewed papers and briefings of analytical assessments on nuclear programs and issues.
  • Generate analytical assessments on nuclear processing technologies to include process operations, engineering, and technical developments.
  • Provide expertise on nuclear material issues including site security, material transportation, and material characterization.
  • Present briefings and classroom instruction related to the nuclear fuel cycle (NFC).
  • Interact and collaborate with agencies and members of the national security community.
  • Abide by all environmental, safety, health and quality requirements and implement practices per ORNL's Standards-based Management System (SBMS).
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation of the Directorate's values and ethics.
  • Occasional domestic travel is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in engineering or other relevant technical field and 8 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the nuclear fuel cycle is desirable, includinguranium mining/milling, uranium refining, UF6 production, uranium enrichment, reactor fuel fabrication, zirconium/hafnium separation, reactor operation, spent fuel reprocessing, highly enriched uranium, or plutonium processing.
  • Experience providing and writing technical analysis for government agencies and senior level policy makers.
  • Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) or other government agencies is highly desirable.
  • Active Q and/or TS clearance is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members.
  • Ability to interact with sponsors and officials from other government agencies.

Special Requirements:

  • Q clearance with SCI: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
