The goal of our Radiation Oncology residency program is to train the next generation of comprehensive oncologists. The residency experience is tailored to ensure that each trainee has a comprehensive understanding of cancer biology, physics and treatment modalities-surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. This is achieved through a robust clinical experience, faculty-run lecture series, rotations through other departments, multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards and many other educational experiences. Our program has 8 resident positions: 2 each for the PGY-2 through PGY-5 years covered by the program. The residents are paired with faculty for each clinical rotation which may take place at University Hospital, Eastpark Medical Center and the William S. Middleton VA hospital adjacent to University Hospital.

The Radiation Oncology GME Manager monitors all deadlines for the program (including, but not exclusive to): ACGME accreditation deadlines, UW Health GME institutional annual deadlines, NRMP and ERAS application and match deadlines; ensuring the program director has the necessary information to meet the deadlines. The GME Manager also oversees the SMPH and visiting med student rotation schedules and evaluation processes in OASIS, AcuityONE45 and VSLO. The GME Manager manages the in-person resident recruitment process annually, from assigning faculty reviews of applications, to inviting applicants and making interview day arrangements including multiple conference room reservations, catering, restaurant, and hotel reservations. The GME manager coordinates graduation tasks: arranging the date, location, menu and framed graduation certificates each year. In addition, the position supervises and assigns work to the Residency Program assistant.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Maintains the resident/fellow and program expenditures. Advises fiscal leadership on program budgetary needs and monitors program expenses within budget constraints
  • Responsible for ensuring resident/fellow and program compliance with policy, accreditation, and regulatory requirements and that appropriate documentation is maintained
  • May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • Serves as the primary contact for the program, liaising with those directly associated with the program, the Institutional GME Office, and regulatory agencies. Advises residents/fellows, program staff/faculty of program and institutional policies and procedures
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of accreditation program requirements and related policies, regulatory requirements, and hospital and program policies to provide expert consult to the Program Director to maintain accreditation and compliance with regulatory bodies and pertinent policies
  • Collaborates with the Program Director to assess curriculum and evaluations, developing the structure and delivery mechanism, and maintaining accurate records of curriculum, evaluations, and participation
  • Provides guidance for resident/fellow recruitment, credentialing, and onboarding to maintain compliance with regulatory bodies and hospital policies
  • Regularly attends monthly program coordinator meetings and GME educational offerings. Collaborates with other colleagues to develop best practices, and serves as an administrative reviewer of other GME programs. Should regularly attend national GME or specialty conference(s)

School of Medicine and Public Health, Human Oncology

The Department of Human Oncology (DHO) was established in 1975, bringing together physicians and scientists from radiation oncology, medical oncology and cancer biology whose academic activities include clinical cancer care, clinical and laboratory research and education. Highly regarded as a clinical and research powerhouse, the productivity of the department is paired with a vibrant culture that fosters respect, mutual support and well-being. The department serves as the cornerstone of the renowned UW Carbone Cancer Center, which received National Cancer Institute designation in 1973 as one of the first six Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States.

The department's setting within a top-tier university and the nation's first School of Medicine and Public Health is key to success. Bridging research faculty and clinicians from many areas of cancer treatment, the department is focused on three primary areas: clinical radiation oncology, radiation oncology physics and cancer biology. These three groups work to ensure delivery of the highest quality clinical care for cancer patients, foster innovative clinical and translational research and provide a rich educational environment for radiation oncology and radiation oncology physics residents, medical students, graduate students and other trainees.

The Department of Human Oncology currently houses 45 faculty members: 18 clinical radiation oncologists (five MD/PhD physician-scientists leading laboratory research programs), 18 radiation oncology physicists, four PhD cancer biologists and five emeritus professors. Growth over the last decade has more than doubled the size of the faculty and tripled the total research funding. The department's leadership structure is dedicated to supporting a diverse workplace and promoting an environment of equity for all faculty, staff, learners and patients.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $71,994; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 years of prior work experience with Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs

  • Previous work experience in Academic medicine


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of ACGME requirements and accreditation standards, program reviews, site visits, and annual reporting

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree highly preferred

  • High school diploma required
