About this opportunity:

The Department of Economics welcomes applications for (2) Assistant Teaching Professors to teach and conduct research in a dynamic academic setting while contributing to an innovative dual degree program in digital economics, developed in partnership with Guangdong University of Technology in Guangzhou, China. Students recruited at GDUT study at GDUT for the first three years with GDUT and BSU faculty, followed by study at BSU in the fourth year. Faculty will have an opportunity to shape global learning experiences and engage in meaningful international collaboration.

The Miller College of Business, home to our Economics Department, is AACSB-accredited and recognized for its rigorous programs, impactful research, and close ties to industry. The Economics Department combines outstanding teaching with an active research profile and a collaborative environment. The department features classes taught by full-time faculty and provides students with rich co-curricular experiences, including internships and engagement with centers such as the Institute for the Study of Political Economy (ISPE) and the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER).

This position will begin teaching in China in August 2026.

Teaching assignments in China are eligible for a stipend (in addition to the base salary listed for this position).

What you'll do and what you will bring:

Position Function

The Assistant Teaching Professor will support Ball State University's dual-degree partnership with Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) in Guangzhou, China. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate economics and quantitative courses. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track teaching position based at Ball State University with a primary teaching assignment in Guangzhou, China. When not teaching in China, the faculty member will teach at Ball State University.

Duties/Responsibilities

1. Primary responsibilities include teaching economics and quantitative undergraduate courses, which may include:

  • Elementary Microeconomics
  • Elementary Macroeconomics
  • Business Statistics
  • Introduction to the Digital Economy
  • Information Economics
  • Platform Economics
  • Probability
  • Mathematical Statistics
  • Economic Big Data Mining and Analytics
  • Data Analytics and Software Application
  • Intermediate Microeconomics
  • Intermediate Macroeconomics
  • Python Programming

2. Work closely with the program director to support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the curriculum.

3. Contribute to the development and periodic revision of syllabi, course materials, and assessment tools to ensure consistency and quality across cohorts.

4. Communicate regularly with the program director regarding student performance, curricular needs, and program developments.

5. Participate in program meetings with BSU and GDUT teams as needed.

Advising, Mentoring, and Student Support:

1. Provide academic mentoring and informal advising to students, especially regarding preparation for their fourth year of study at BSU.

2. Offer guidance on academic expectations, study strategies, and professional development in economics and related fields.

3. Support the cultural and academic transition of GDUT students by helping them understand U.S.-style coursework, academic integrity standards, and expectations for class participation.

Service and Professional Engagement:

1. Engage in appropriate service activities at the department and college level.

2. Participate in program assessment and accreditation-related activities as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Economics or related discipline (e.g., Agricultural Economics, Finance with strong economics training, Statistics or Data Analytics with substantial economics coursework) from an accredited institution by date of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching a range of undergraduate economics or related quantitative courses (e.g., microeconomics, macroeconomics, business statistics, econometrics, data analytics).
  • Ability and willingness to live and teach in Guangzhou, China, for at least one semester as part of the appointment.
  • Prior international teaching experience or experience working with international students, particularly students from China.
