Function: Engineering and Engineering Services
Job Summary:The Senior Plant Engineer provides technical expertise and support related to fixed equipment specification, design, operation, and mechanical integrity. This role ensures equipment reliability by collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, engineers, reliability personnel, and inspection staff, to execute the mechanical integrity (MI) program. The engineer will also support Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS&S, while developing and improving departmental standards and best practices. This position encompasses work with pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, storage tanks, valves, pressure relief devices, boilers, and mechanical instrumentation components. The ideal candidate will have strong command of applicable industry codes and standards, contribute independent technical insight, mentor junior engineers, and engage with engineering teams across CF Industries to share best practices and support world class MI program execution.
Job Description:
Job Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively within the Plant Engineering Department, consisting of approximately 35 direct and contract personnel specializing in mechanical engineering, reliability, and inspection.
- Investigate, diagnose, and recommend equipment repairs that enhance onstream reliability in support of Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering needs for routine tasks, projects, and turnaround schedules.
- Partner with Unit Reliability Supervisors to develop preturnaround and turnaround inspection plans aligned with equipment design specifications and process conditions. Actively participate in turnaround and shutdown activities.
- Develop and communicate repair plans for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, and piping while ensuring adherence to CF specifications and applicable code requirements.
- Understand damage mechanisms affecting equipment in ammonia, urea, nitric acid, and UAN processes, and apply this knowledge to equipment design, fabrication, and repair decisions.
- Develop temporary equipment and piping repair plans and evaluate permanent corrective actions within required schedules.
- Provide technical guidance to plant personnel, including designers, inspectors, maintenance, operations, and engineering staff, regarding design and fabrication specifications.
- Review equipment specifications and fabrication drawings to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., API, ASME) and suitability for reliable operation.
- Consider safety, quality, cost, and schedule in all technical decisions, and clearly communicate the benefits, drawbacks, and alternative paths to supervision and management.
- Identify and implement improvements to the mechanical integrity program.
- Develop and maintain engineering specifications, including pressure vessel, piping, valve, paint, and insulation specifications.
- Participate in PHAs, LOPA studies, incident investigations, and followup on action item resolution.
- Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS to ensure Plant Engineering meets enduser needs and complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
- Serve as a corporate resource on API, ANSI, ASME, and other applicable standards for fixed and rotating equipment design, inspection, repair, and alteration.
- Demonstrate selfmotivation, effective prioritization, sound decision making, and a commitment to continuous learning of industry standards and best practices.
- Support the corporate EHS&S Policy by integrating applicable requirements into engineering programs.
- Continuously identify and implement opportunities to improve site safety.
Internal Controls: Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures that support internal control efforts. Identifies and reports internal control deficiencies to department management. Successful incumbents will have:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- Ten or more years of hands on, in plant experience (permanent or periodic temporary assignments).
- Seven or more years of engineering experience in oil, gas, or chemical manufacturing.
- Knowledge of mechanical integrity requirements defined in OSHA 1910.119.
- Experience with ammonia, urea, nitric acid, and UAN processes is preferred.
- Seven or more years of experience with mechanical integrity is preferred. Experience using inspection management and RBI software, such as GE's APM (formerly Meridium) mechanical integrity module, is preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with personnel at all levels.
- Strong leadership and management skills, including team leadership, independent decision making, prioritization, and mentoring of junior engineers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Ability to remain drug and alcohol free, including random and for cause testing.
