The Flight Controller - Propulsion (Prop) will be assigned to the Propulsion Group within the Flight Dynamics Division at NASA Johnson Space Center. This position is for a Flight Controller for Space Launch System (SLS), Orion, Boeing's CST-100 Starliner, Gateway and/or other Artemis space exploration vehicles within the NASA JSC Flight Operations Directorate (FOD). The candidate will first train and then attain certifications for a Mission Control console position. The candidate will interface with the NASA customer on a daily basis as well as many other engineering organizations and domestic/international partners.



Responsibilities

The Propulsion (PROP)/Booster Officer irresponsibility's include:

    All aspects of the operation and management of the propulsion system hardware and software used during all phases of flight. This includes thruster performance, propellant usage, translation burns and attitude control maneuvers, and consumables budgeting, management, and reporting
  • Understanding and providing operations oversight, support, assessment for spacecraft and launch vehicle propulsion systems of the commercial crew (commercial vehicles that delivers crew to the ISS), Orion, and Space Launch System (SLS) vehicles
  • Supporting meetings and concisely reporting results to management and team-members, writing system briefs and console procedures, developing MCC displays, console tools, cue cards, and making oral presentations
  • Individuals in this position will support evening, night, and weekend shifts for mission and simulation events
  • This position interfaces directly with the NASA customer, subcontractors and international partners and are expected to have an awareness of the company's competitive position and the impact of failing to meet schedule or quality requirements


Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • (ABET) from an accredited engineering school, college or university is required, or anticipate degree by June 2026
  • This is an entry-level position. Preferred position related experience is 0-2 years Previous experience and knowledge with propulsion and fluids curricula is highly desired
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, technical, and administrative skills are mandatory
  • This position requires successful completion of a government background check before commencement of employment
  • Candidate must have a technical background and a good understanding of engineering principles
  • The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated initiative, outstanding organizational skills, the ability to participate in a team environment, and the ability to function well under pressure
  • Must be proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications
  • The candidate must have strong multi-tasking/work prioritization skills
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-time operations is essential
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, technical, and administrative skills are mandatory
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and coordinate a wide range of tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to progress through flight controller and instructor certifications
  • Must be able to apply technical knowledge and operations concepts to exercise effective decision making and initiative in a real-time and fast-paced operational environment
  • Must be a self-starter who excels in a dynamic environment with the ability to work effectively both alone or as part of a team
  • Required to pass a standard flight controller physical examination and pass security clearances
  • Shift work (nights, weekends, and holidays) is required
  • The successful candidate must be able to meet JSC requirements for certification as a Flight Controller
  • In addition, candidates must be able to apply for and successfully receive/maintain the required security clearance
  • Must be able to pass an Air Force Class III physical
  • Night, weekend, and Holiday work may be required for integrated simulations and flight support
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally as required
  • Successful candidates must be a US Citizen and be able to apply for and successfully receive and maintain security clearance per eligibility requirements

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Preference for Aerospace, Aeronautical, Astronautical, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in propulsion in coursework or internships

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation

  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed
