Position Title: Crew Leader, Airport Starting Salary: $25.43 – $31.28 per hour (minimum to midpoint), commensurate with training and experience The City of Columbia is seeking a skilled and dependable Crew Leader to support operations at the Columbia Regional Airport. This position plays a critical role in maintaining airport facilities, airfield areas, equipment, fencing, and grounds while ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration regulations. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and experienced in leading and coordinating maintenance work. The primary purpose of this position is to plan, organize, and assign maintenance tasks to crew members while performing highly skilled maintenance and repair work. The Crew Leader provides guidance and training to staff, ensures work quality, and promotes a safe and compliant work environment. This role also involves operating a variety of equipment and working closely with airport tenants to maintain buildings and offices. Essential duties include leading and coordinating daily work activities, assigning and prioritizing tasks, and guiding employees through instruction and on-the-job training. The position performs advanced maintenance and repair work across all airport airfield areas, facilities, and equipment. Responsibilities include inspecting completed work to ensure compliance with FAA-approved plans, commercial airport certification standards, and TSA security regulations. The Crew Leader assists with purchasing tools, materials, and supplies, manages inventory, performs snow removal and ice prevention, and creates and maintains accurate records and logs. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position, along with performing other job-related duties as assigned. This position does not have formal supervisory authority but provides leadership through training, instruction, work coordination, and oversight of work quality. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and three to five years of related maintenance or facilities experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Required licenses and certifications include a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and a valid Department of Transportation medical certification. Successful candidates will have knowledge of standard building trades practices, materials, tools, and equipment, along with safety standards related to maintenance work and equipment operation. The position requires skill in verbal and written communication, recordkeeping, estimating time and materials, and operating mechanical, electrical, construction, and plumbing-related equipment. Candidates must be able to learn and apply FAA and TSA regulations, demonstrate strong safety awareness, exercise sound judgment, plan and delegate work, handle stressful situations professionally, and provide a high level of customer service. Work is performed in a combination of office, shop, warehouse, vehicle, construction site, and outdoor environments, with frequent exposure to weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, loud noise, and other hazards. The position involves significant physical demands, including lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, frequent standing and walking, operating machinery, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and working in a constant state of alertness to ensure safety.
