SUMMARY

The Forensic Bereavement Coordinator leads bereavement operations within the Coroner's Office, providing compassionate, timely, and professional support to families after a death. This role offers emotional support, crisis intervention, and resource coordination, serving as a key liaison between families, staff, and investigative personnel. Core responsibilities include guiding families through investigative and administrative processes, connecting them with counseling and community resources, developing grief-support initiatives, and addressing needs related to unclaimed or abandoned decedents. The position also involves documentation, participation in family meetings, collaboration with Deputy Coroners, and contributions to public health research and presentations. Candidates must be master's-level mental health professionals with strong communication, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills, capable of working both independently and as part of a team in a moderately active environment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, plan, implement, analyze and organize bereavement operations for the Coroner's Office, to ensure appropriateness of care and communication.
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for families following a death, offering emotional support, crisis intervention, and additional resources as needed.
  • Connect grieving families and friends to counseling services, and develop initiatives to create grief support groups that meet at the Coroner's Office.
  • Ensure the employees of the Coroner's Office connect to services when needed.
  • Guide families through the investigation process, explain case status, and help them understand how to obtain reports when needed.
  • Assist families with navigating the death process, including funeral arrangements, obtaining death certificates, and connecting with grief counseling services.
  • Coordinate with the investigating Deputy Coroner to ensure timely communication and follow up support.
  • Address family/friend concerns regarding abandoned and unclaimed bodies at hospitals or nursing homes, and follow up with families when the body has been in the Coroner morgue for more than 36 hours.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with families and staff.
  • Participate in family meetings as needed.
  • Document all family interactions, including bereavement notes, data collection, daily progress notes, and other related interactions.
  • Conduct research for public health, and present at meetings when needed.
  • Ensure missing, incomplete, and/or untimely documentation issues are resolved.
  • Assist with the probate process for all unclaimed decedent's with possible estates.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in psychology, sociology, psychiatry or related field.
  • Must be a mental health professional that is licensed or license eligible.
  • Previous experience is essential.
  • Strong professional and technical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written andoral.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good time management and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team creativity and strategically
