Job Description

We have an opening for a Mechanical Technologist or Senior Mechanical Technologist on the Equipment and Technical Support Team within the Center for Micro and Nano Technology (CMNT). This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance. You will provide technical support for the repair, installation, maintenance, and operation of systems and equipment in support of research and development activities. You will frequently work on microfabrication equipment in a Class 100 cleanroom and supporting laboratories, including biological laboratories. This position supports the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide general electrical and mechanical support for the setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, removal, and decommissioning of electro-mechanical equipment for photolithography, thin film deposition, plasma etching, wet chemical processing, metrology, and other semiconductor and supporting processes.
  • Plumb utilities and work with hand tools and machine tools.
  • Work in a Class 100 cleanroom environment, laser laboratories, and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories.
  • Work with chemical systems and hazardous waste, maintain vacuum systems, and perform removal and installation of toxic gas systems.
  • Track component inventory.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with many simultaneous tasks and responsibilities, and accommodate occasional priority changes under general supervision.
  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment with team members, customers, service providers, and vendors.
  • Clearly document problems, progress, and solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.3 level

  • Design and fabricate complex mechanical components and systems, including planning and selecting materials, equipment, and methods.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting, independently identify problems, and implement solutions.
  • Create safety documents, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other documentation.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in engineering, vacuum, electronic, or mechanical technology, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience operating mechanical or electrical hardware and tools.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical or electrical equipment.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Experience making independent decisions to resolve a variety of technical problems.
  • Knowledge of office computer software, including word processing and spreadsheets, necessary to produce documentation and graphics.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment, and demonstrated effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Additional qualifications at the 533.3 level

  • Advanced skills in identifying and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical problems, with the ability to suggest and implement solutions.
  • Advanced experience with engineering hardware design, fabrication, evaluation, and testing processes.
  • Ability to create and write complex procedures, engineering notes, sketches, and drawings.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with vacuum systems.
  • Experience with machining.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Experience in welding.
  • Microfabrication experience.
  • Cleanroom operations experience.

Pay Range

$43.55 - $53.36 Hourly for the 533.2 level

$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly for the 533.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
