Position Summary
This is the intermediate/advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with general or limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work with greater independence, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are competent in use of fundamental concepts and procedures to work that are progressively complex and varied. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve. This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Engineering office in Lake Mary Florida. This work group is responsible for design protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from the routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material.
The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 13kV, 25kV, 69kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to develop expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide construction support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.
Responsibilities
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise. Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team. Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of moderate scope and complexity. Conducts engineering and related studies; projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems. Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions. Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files. Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. Engineer II
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Engineer III
Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
A Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program will be preferred. Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles. Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations. Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Good written and oral communication skills. Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam. Understanding of basic principles of project management. Experience in the utility industry.
Working Conditions
Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility Some visits to field sites and/or plants are required, using a variety of transportation modes and some overnight stays Must be capable of using a computer and remain seated at desk for long periods of time
