Position Summary

The Engineering Technologist II position is the second level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. Engineering Technologist II applies technical expertise to solve more complex problems and management skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop deeper technical skills and the ability to work with an increasing degree of independence.

The Engineering Technologist III position is the third level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role. An Engineering Technologist III provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Employees in the Engineering Technologist III position are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Engineering office in Lake Mary Florida. This work group is responsible for design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material.

The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to develop some knowledge in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineering Technologist II

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology with no experience, OR

  • Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology AND two (2) + years of experience, OR

  • Four (4) + years of equivalent experience without a degree

Engineering Technologist III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology AND two (2) + years of relevant industry experience, OR

  • Associate degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology AND four (4) + years of experience. OR

  • Six (6) + years equivalent experience without a degree

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility

  • Some visits to field sites and/or plants are required, using a variety of transportation modes and some overnight stays

  • Must be capable of using a computer and remain seated at desk for long periods of time
