Overview The Central Engineering organization is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Engineer to join the Customer Energy Solutions section. In this role, you will lead and manage large-scale engineering projects, directing the work of Discipline Engineers to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery that meets all specifications, safety, environmental, and quality standards. The position requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines. Responsibilities include coordinating technical support during field construction, preparing progress and financial reports for company leadership, and supporting projects within Substation Operations as well as System and Transmission Operations.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Coordinate multi-discipline projects by managing engineering deliverables and reviewing estimates, schedules, field drawings, and specifications for accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor project schedules, progress, and cost control, serving as the single point of contact for Central Engineering with the Central Operations Project Manager.
- Ensure compliance with specifications, drawings, company standards, regulatory requirements, and any special conditions.
- Conduct field visits, site walks, and participate in pre-award meetings.
- Track engineering deliverables and maintain accurate project data in databases, including scopes of work, estimates, schedules, calculations, and procurement details, update project status regularly.
- Lead engineering package and schedule review meetings.
- Provide leadership and technical expertise to colleagues while managing tasks and schedules across multiple technical areas.
- Support Con Edison during system emergencies and equipment outages.
- Review equipment and construction specifications, vendor bid documents, and EH&S checklists to ensure quality and compliance.
- Collaborate with vendors and customers to optimize designs and establish project schedules.
- Coordinate with Lead Engineer to confirm design efforts and ensure licensing, environmental, permitting, safety, and compliance requirements are incorporated into projects.
- Troubleshoot project issues and develop efficient, effective solutions.
- Perform additional assignments as directed.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of engineering work experience supporting utility operations and/or design, including construction, substation, steam, and power generation systems. or
- Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of engineering and/or design experience in utility operations and/or design, including construction, substation, steam, and power generation systems.
Relevant Work Experience
- Proficiency in written and oral communication, required.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
- Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), required.
- Strong leadership and project management skills, ensuring effective oversight of major projects, required.
- Supervisory experience of management and union employees, preferred.
- Knowledge of applicable project management specifications, policies, standards, and best practices, preferred.
- Experience writing, reviewing, editing request for proposals (RFP) for engineering and/or design services, preferred.
- Construction or utility operations experience in substations, steam and/or power generation operations, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Preferred
Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work overtime and extended hours, as well as on weekends/holidays as needed, or as system conditions dictate.
- Ability to detect traffic sounds, alarms and backup warning devices when working near traffic, around moving equipment and within substations and buildings.
