Job Summary/Primary Purpose: The Music Instructor will be responsible for teaching group and/or individual music lessons, developing curriculum and assessments, and establishing collaborative partnerships within the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for teaching individual and/or group music lessons.
  • Actively participates in and supports the School of Music every week, and Sunday Worship Praise Team as needed.
  • Effectively design and implement curriculum, assessment rubrics, and lesson plans for each course taught. A record and summary of activities must be provided on a regular basis.
  • Develop and implement ongoing collaborative partnerships for music programming with schools and organizations.
  • Required to actively participate in the recruitment and outreach efforts.
  • Willing to teach additional classes and workshops as needed.
  • Attend all required department and facility meetings and training as assigned.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Education and/or Experience:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Music or equivalent qualified performance experience.
  • Two to five years of teaching experience either in a classroom setting or private/group lessons.
  • Knowledge of music theory and curriculum design or evidence of experience in curriculum development.
  • A record of musical performance experience.


Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.



  • Have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Performance experience in individual content area of teaching.
  • Is expected to start class on time with room set-up and reset room as required.
  • A working knowledge of music literature.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of The Salvation Army.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to promote the mission of the Salvation Army.
  • Good communication skills including interpersonal skills.
  • English proficiency required; Spanish language skills helpful.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Exceptional flexibility and ability to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a team.
  • Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters
  • Strong independent judgement.
  • General computer knowledge is required to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.


Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 30 days of hire as established by The Salvation Army.

Physical requirements include:



  • Satisfactory speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity.
  • Lifting, pulling and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires bending, squatting and walking.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.


Working Conditions: The work environment is a community center with light to moderate traffic and noise levels. For other duties of this job, such as outdoor special events and community center activities, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment at these events is usually moderate to loud.
