Department Summary

Situated at the cutting edge of healthcare and technology, our team is dedicated to building "out of the box" analytics. Here, you won't just be tweaking existing models; you will be developing novel deep learning algorithms and leveraging next-gen computer vision to solve complex biological puzzles. If you are passionate about coding, curious about the unseen data in pathology, and eager to work on high-impact projects, this is your technical playground.

This internship position is located in Tucson, AZ , on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Innovate & Implement: Design, implement, and interpret deep learning algorithms to solve complex challenges in pathology image analysis.

  • Collaborate: Work with cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate and apply state-of-the-art computer vision techniques (Deep Learning/Machine Learning).

  • Automate: Implement workflow automation utilizing a combination of AI/ML methodologies and system-level automation.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Proactively share findings and technical knowledge to support the development of the wider Roche community.

  • Scale & Optimization: Solve the challenge of processing high-resolution medical images at high speeds to support exponentially increasing demand.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education:
You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student - Senior level preferred).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:
Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or Biophysics.

Required Skills:

  • Programming: Fluency in Python is required.

  • Core AI/ML: In-depth knowledge of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Computer Vision fundamentals.

  • Frameworks: Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

  • Data Handling: Experience working with large datasets; specific experience with image processing or Whole Slide Imaging (WSI).

  • Optimization: Proven ability to optimize code and algorithm efficiency.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Experience applying ML algorithms to biomedical imaging data.

  • Familiarity with High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and parallelization.

  • Strong collaborative coding practices, including version control (Git) and literate programming.

  • A track record of contributions to open-source packages or publications in top conferences or journals.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Arizona is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
