Armstrong World Industries, Inc. (AWI) has a job opportunity for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator located in Macon, GA. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for leading the daily execution of the Boardmill process control strategy and managing treatment plant operations. Additionally, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be responsible for serving as point person to identify and participate in correction of treatment plant and operational issues such as waste treatment.

What does a Wastewater Treatment Technician do?

This position ensures the Plant is supplied with process water and the solids are recirculated back into the system for use.The incumbent receives guidance from the EHS Specialist, Boardmill Value Stream Manager, VSIC and Engineer and interfaces with other plant supervisors to ensure treatment plant remains operable so the plant can operate. The technician completes the necessary PM's and / or basic maintenance on critical treatment plant equipment.

  • Ensure the effective and timely management of process water and solids for the plant
  • Proper maintenance of equipment and facilities
  • Minimization of wastewater discharge
  • Ensure all State and Federal water and environmental requirements are met
  • Applying knowledge of process control tools to identify additional control and cost saving opportunities
  • Communicating with wet end operators and supervisors regarding process control issues
  • Providing support for root cause failure analysis (RCFA) activities
  • Providing support and input to Boardmill Common Cause Team resources for updates to SOPs, Reaction Guides and While Running Guides
  • Participating in the plant safety process by completing risk assessments, safety, and environmental training and housekeeping audits and tasks
  • Adhering to documented reaction guides for troubleshooting situations
  • Analytic Testing: MLSS, TSS, DO, COD, pH, Ammonia Nitrogen, Nitrate Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and others as needed to ensure proper control and trouble shoot problems.
  • Operate belt press, operate dump truck, maintain clarifiers, Lift 50 pounds, Problem solve upsets with basin, clarifiers etc.,
  • Communicate potential problems with the Forming Operations and Fabrication.
  • Work with Maintenance Department to plan and execute both emergency and preventative maintenance needs.
  • As a member of the Environmental, Health and Safety Department, other responsibilities will include storm water testing and management, spill reaction and control measures, environmental and safety audits and other related functions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot basic mechanical systems such as pumps, valves, filter presses, piping for the effective operation of the treatment plant
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiarity using computer systems and programs
  • Ability to work 8 - 12 hour rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and inclement weather (wastewater treatment is a 24-hour process)

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully run analytical tests, take measurements, document findings and take appropriate reactions as required for key compliance activities
  • Experience and/or understanding of the primary & secondary treatment process
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery (dump truck and forklift) to load material into the process
  • Proven ability to demonstrate general wastewater test methods
  • Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, conversion of fractions and conversion of units of measurement

  • Associate's degree in chemistry, engineering or related field or relevant work experience
  • Class 3 or higher wastewater certification
  • Experience in a process manufacturing environment
  • Experience with wastewater treatment processes
  • 3+ years of experience as a technician or operator in a manufacturing environment
