Overview:

The Labor Hand (Ground Hand) is the backbone of midstream pipeline construction. This role supports all field operations including pipe handling, ditch preparation, equipment spotting, cleanup, and safe worksite practices. Labor Hands work directly under the Foreman and alongside operators, welders, and other crew members to keep the job running safely and efficiently.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assists with stringing, skidding, placing, and aligning pipe along the right-of-way.
  • Supports ditch prep, bedding, padding, and tie-in hole cleanup.
  • Installs skids, chocks, sandbags, erosion control devices, and safety equipment.
  • Helps with layout of materials, tools, fittings, and welding supplies.
  • Acts as a spotter for excavators, dozers, side booms, trucks, and rigging operations.
  • Maintains communication using proper hand signals and radio protocols.
  • Establishes and maintains safe exclusion zones around heavy equipment.
  • Keeps ground personnel clear of pinch points, swing areas, and load paths.
  • Follows all safety rules, PPE requirements, and company/client procedures.
  • Participates in daily JSAs, toolbox talks, and task hazard assessments.
  • Keeps work areas clean, organized, and free from tripping or safety hazards.
  • Reports unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment issues immediately.
  • Cleans, grinds, bevels, or preps pipe ends as instructed for welding.
  • Assists with coating repairs, wrapping, brushing, and inspection prep.
  • Supports lowering-in operations, ensuring pipe protection and alignment.
  • Helps with valve setting, fitting installation, and hydrotest preparation.
  • Safely operates basic tools such as shovels, tampers, grinders, cutoff wheels, come- alongs, chain wrenches, and torches (as trained).
  • Operates small machinery when certified or authorized 0umping jacks, compactors, etc.).
  • Maintains tools, hoses, and equipment in good working condition.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with materials, pipe, mats, fittings, and supplies.
  • Organizes and stages materials at designated locations along the ROW.
  • Assists with fence removal/repair, cleanup, grading, and restoration tasks.
  • Maintains clear access routes and safe walking paths for crew members.
  • Provides tools, equipment, and assistance to welders during production.
  • Helps operators by guiding them into safe work positions.
  • Carries out work assignments from the Foreman accurately and efficiently.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No supervisory responsibilities are associated with this position.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in oil and gas, construction, or pipeline work (preferred but not required).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A strong work ethic and ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work long hours, all weather conditions, and rugged terrain.
  • Understanding of pipeline safety practices and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow instructions, communicates clearly, and work as part of a team.
