Overview: The Welder Helper assists the Welder during all welding activities on midstream oil & gas pipeline projects. This role coordinating closely with the Welder, to maintain production, quality, and safety.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides tools, equipment, and assistance to welders during production.
  • Helps welders by assuring safe work positions.
  • Carries out work assignments from the welder accurately and efficiently.
  • Safely operates basic tools such as shovels, tampers, grinders, cutoff wheels, come-alongs, chain wrenches, and torches (as trained).
  • Maintains tools, hoses, and equipment in good working condition.
  • Conducts daily pre-checks and walkarounds related to tools, hoses, and welding equipment.
  • Reports equipment defects, leaks, alarms, or mechanical issues immediately.
  • Assures equipment is clean, fueled, greased, and properly maintained throughout the day.
  • Follows all safety rules, PPE requirements, and company/client procedures.
  • Participates in daily JSAs, toolbox talks, and task hazard assessments.
  • Keeps work areas clean, organized, and free from tripping or safety hazards.
  • Reports unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment issues immediately.
  • Works closely with the Welder, to maintain smooth workflow.
  • Receives direction clearly and adjusts welding operations based on field conditions.
  • Achieves required welding production rates.
  • Maintains consistent weld quality-line-up, spacing, alignment, pre-heats.
  • Coordinates with pipe handling, and skidding, as needed.
  • Ensures minimal rework and welds rejects by maintaining accuracy and precision.
  • Cleans, grinds, bevels, or preps pipe ends as instructed for welding.
  • Assists proper alignment and gap tolerance before welding starts.
  • Assists completing critical welds requiring specialty processes or advanced skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years pipeline welder helper experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven success assisting high-production welding on midstream projects.
  • High commitment to safety, quality, and production standards.
