Overview:

The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery used in midstream oil & gas pipeline construction. This includes excavators, dozers, side booms, and other support equipment. Operators work under the direction of the Foreman and Superintendent to complete trenching, grading, lowering-in, backfilling, and right-ofway preparation tasks in accordance with project plans and safety regulations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operates excavators, dozers, and/or side booms in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Performs trench excavation, ditch cleaning, slot trenching, and grade work according to specifications.
  • Handles pipe via side boom, vacuum lift, or rigging during stringing, staging, and lowering-in operations.
  • Maintains proper control when operating around personnel, utilities, and active work zones.
  • Excavates trench to the correct depth, width, slope, and alignment per project drawings.
  • Assists with ditch prep, bedding, bell holes, tie-in digs, and bore pit excavation.
  • Grades and maintains right-of-way (ROW) surfaces for equipment access and safety.
  • Supports welding, coating, and crew activities by positioning pipe and materials as directed.
  • Conducts daily pre-checks and walkarounds (fluids, tracks, hoses, controls, safety systems).
  • Reports equipment defects, leaks, alarms, or mechanical issues immediately.
  • Keeps equipment clean, fueled, greased, and properly maintained throughout the day.
  • Prevents damage to equipment, property, and underground utilities.
  • Follows all OSHA, company, and client safety procedures, including:
    • Spotter communication
    • Trench safety
    • Equipment exclusion zones
    • Rigging standards
    • Load handling and securement
  • Maintains constant situational awareness when working near ground personnel.
  • Attends daily JSAs, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.
  • Works closely with foreman, labor hands, welders, and other operators to maintain smooth workflow.
  • Uses hand signals, radios, and standardized operator/spotter communication protocols.
  • Receives direction clearly and adjust operations based on field conditions.
  • Achieves required trenching, backfill, and grading production rates.
  • Maintains consistent trench quality-clean walls, proper depth, and correct alignment.
  • Assists with pipe handling, skidding, lowering-in, padding, and compaction as needed.
  • Ensures minimal rework by maintaining accuracy and precision.
  • Prevents damage to fences, wetlands, waterways and other sensitive areas.
  • Follow erosion control measures and environmental mitigation plans.
  • Respects landowner property and boundaries at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No supervisory responsibilities are associated with this position.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years experience operating heavy equipment; pipeline experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on midstream or oil & gas right-of-way projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate safely around crews, utilities, and confined workspace.
  • Knowledge of trenching, ditch prep, grading, and pipeline lowering-in procedures.
  • Ability to work long hours, various terrains, and all-weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
