The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Research Pathology; Histopathology

Department Summary

This position is embedded within the Pathology Core labs of the Genentech Research Pathology.

Department and is focused on development and application of tissue based procedures and imaging protocols. The successful candidate will provide scientific and technical expertise for optimizing the highly complex process of creating and data entry and extraction for Tissue Micro Arrays (TMA) histopathology assays to support research scientists and pathologists who discover and develop drugs for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, ocular and neurological diseases. The Core labs at Genentech are state-of-the art labs equipped with novel technologies and automated platforms, and develops techniques primarily for discovery research using both standard and internally developed methodologies.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Optimize the Tissue Microarray (TMA) process from tissue selection to image analysis for current projects and for potential new system development.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Basic understanding of histology processes through coursework or hands-on laboratory experience.

  • Foundational experience with coding or computational tools (e.g., coursework, projects, or research experience).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Exposure to tissue microarray (TMA) construction through coursework or research experience.

  • Experience or interest in workflow optimization, including elements of data and image management.

  • Experience with project coordination or project management in an academic or research setting.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location ofCalifornia is $45.00-$50.00 hour.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
