Current Assignment

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Maintenance Engineer to support the reliability, safety, and long-term performance of the District's rail system and supporting infrastructure. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that BART's assets are maintained to the highest standards while supporting ongoing system reinvestment, modernization, and service reliability initiatives.

Under general direction, the Maintenance Engineer provides engineering support for maintenance programs across Transportation, Maintenance & Engineering, and Rolling Stock & Shops. The incumbent analyzes asset performance, develops maintenance strategies, and collaborates closely with operations, field maintenance staff, and engineering teams to improve equipment reliability, reduce service disruptions, and ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.

As BART continues to advance major capital and modernization programs, including fleet renewal, infrastructure reinvestment, and technology upgrades, this role is critical in translating engineering standards and asset management principles into practical, field-ready maintenance solutions.

Key priorities for this assignment include:

  • Enhancing asset reliability and lifecycle performance through data-driven maintenance strategies and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Supporting system reinvestment and modernization efforts by developing maintenance plans for new and upgraded infrastructure, equipment, and technologies.

  • Strengthening safety and regulatory compliance by ensuring maintenance practices meet applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

  • Improving coordination between engineering and field maintenance to ensure maintainable designs, clear standards, and efficient execution.

  • Leveraging data and analytics to identify trends, reduce failure rates, and optimize preventive and corrective maintenance programs.

  • Supporting workforce readiness by developing technical guidance, procedures, and training support for maintenance personnel.

The most qualified candidates for this position will have highly developed competencies in the following area, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:

  • Maintenance Engineering & Asset Management: Demonstrated expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating maintenance strategies for complex systems in transit, industrial, or infrastructure environments.

  • Reliability & Data Analysis: Proven ability to analyze asset performance data, identify failure trends, and recommend corrective and preventive maintenance solutions.

  • Systems & Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, or civil systems and their application to rail or industrial maintenance programs.

  • Safety & Regulatory Compliance: In-depth knowledge of applicable safety standards, codes, and regulations and the ability to apply them to maintenance practices.

  • Collaboration & Communication: Ability to work effectively with field maintenance staff, operations personnel, engineers, and contractors to implement practical solutions.

  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Demonstrated skill in evaluating complex maintenance issues, developing alternatives, and implementing effective solutions.

  • Project & Change Management: Experience supporting maintenance impacts of capital projects, new technologies, or operational changes.

Examples of Duties

  1. Performs a variety of professional maintenance engineering duties including oversight of Preventive/Predictive Maintenance (PM) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) procedures by developing engineering type solutions to repetitive equipment failures and other maintenance related problems; implements methods to reduce the need for maintenance and ultimately eliminating the occurrence of failures and assisting in the development of processes and equipment specifications enabling a comprehensive overall lifecycle cost and reliability perspective.

  2. Develops partnerships and works closely with key stakeholders in and outside the organization such as Maintenance & Engineering, Rolling Stock & Shops, Operations, Material Management and Reliability Engineering on process to ensure that materials and equipment are reliable and in a state of good repair.

  3. Develops and administers the Preventive/Predictive Maintenance Program by specifying and developing standard repair techniques of major repetitive tasks such as component replacements; Ensures that responsible personnel are trained in the Preventive/Predictive Maintenance Program.

  4. Analyzes asset histories to identify specific repetitive failures, and create a plan to address these failures.

  5. Reviews assigned asset failures to determine what preventive maintenance actions may have prevented the failure, and to identify means to reduce the likelihood of repeat occurrences.

  6. Develops standardized processes to influence new construction and equipment purchases including materials, equipment and spare parts.

  7. Identifies potential cost reductions through extended parts life, reducing labor costs, and other parts related improvement techniques.

  8. Maintains and updates a library of all assets and standard job tasks for future reference and implementation; conducts periodic audits of job plans to verify effectiveness using results to apply value analysis toward the maintenance division.

  9. Troubleshoots Enterprise Asset Management software system.

  10. Participates in the review phase of design of capital additions, asset purchases, and changes in plant layout to ensure full maintainability of all assets, utilities, and facilities; carries out quality inspections on jobs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Possession of a bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time professional verifiable experience in preventative maintenance system, equipment operational performance and reliability, or a closely related experience.

Substitution:
Additional professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.
