The Advanced Therapy & Payer Strategy Director is a pivotal leader within the oncology ecosystem, responsible for building tailored payer strategies and driving contracting efforts that expand access, reimbursement, and sustainability of advanced therapies delivered in the community setting; including cellular therapies, gene therapies, and theranostics. This role bridges clinical innovation and payer engagement, ensuring that transformative treatments reach patients efficiently and equitably.
This director will lead strategic initiatives that align practice capabilities with payer expectations, mitigate financial and operational barriers, and identify scalable growth opportunities. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in oncology, payer contracting, and advanced therapy reimbursement, with a proven ability to influence stakeholders, mentor teams, and deliver results in a complex, evolving landscape.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Development

  • Assess market dynamics and collaborate with practices and managed care teams to craft practice-specific payer strategies.

  • Lead development of scalable models for community-based advanced therapy programs.

  • Identify and prioritize opportunities to establish innovative payment models.

Contracting & Negotiation

  • Direct payer contracting efforts for general practice services and advanced therapies, ensuring sustainable reimbursement.

  • Mentor and develop team members to support payer contracting and development of payer strategies.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a strategic liaison between providers, payers, and internal teams.

  • Represent the organization in payer strategy forums and advisory councils.

Operational Enablement

  • Develop toolkits, dashboards, and playbooks to support practice execution of payer strategies.

  • Partner with finance, pharmacy, legal, and compliance teams to align on contracting and operational models.

Minimum Requirement

  • Degree or equivalent and typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience. Less years required if has relevant Master's or Doctorate qualifications.

Education

  • MBA, MHA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred.

Critical Skills

  • 10+ years in managed care, community oncology leadership, ambulatory medical center or specialty healthcare services.

  • 5+ years of direct experience in cellular therapy or advanced therapy contracting.

  • Demonstrated success in negotiating complex reimbursement contracts and designing novel payment solutions.

  • Deep understanding of the healthcare continuum, including relationships among manufacturers, providers, payers, and patients.

  • Familiarity with cell and gene therapy reimbursement, theranostics, and value-based care models.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations (HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid).

Additional Knowledge and Skills

  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills; ability to influence across business units.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Strong presentation skills with compelling and clear visual and verbal messaging skills.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and lead through influence.

  • Strong prioritization, time management and project management skills

  • Ability to manage complex issues, function independently, demonstrate flexibility, as well as the ability to work effectively with remote internal and external teams.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve issues related to payer relations and market challenges.

  • Critical thinking, analytical, and research capabilities to drive execution.

Working Conditions

  • 30-40% travel required.

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$146,700 - $244,500
