Job Summary:

  • Collaborates with the health care team to provide social, emotional, and developmental support during pediatric patients' illness and hospitalization.
  • Coordinates access to health-related services and assists with utilizing available resources
  • Provides diversional and therapeutic play activities along with utilizing skills and resources to educate patient and families about hospital experiences to reduce stress and anxiety while promoting coping.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a physically and emotionally safe, therapeutic and healing environment for patients, families and staff.
  • Completes needs assessments for inpatient pediatric patient/families, clients within the HFHSJ Bereavement/End of Life program, Pediatric Ambulatory Surgery Department and in the Emergency Department
  • Actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, integrating goals and plans to promote optimal patient care that is family-centered, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and psychosocially sound. Regularly attends and participates in medical, multidisciplinary, and psychosocial team meetings.
  • Provide education regarding illness/condition, treatment, procedures and coping techniques to patients, family members, and the larger community as appropriate.
  • Develops and/or participates in outreach and educational activities to teach families, staff and the community about issues and services related to children.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of contacts, services provided and outcomes
  • Approximately 50% focus on pediatric emergency department; remaining time distributed across ambulatory surgery area, inpatient pediatric floors, and outpatient areas.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • Child Life Professional certification eligible, as credentialed from the Associate of Child Life Professionals; attained within one year of hire to the position
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
