Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to One Energy Plazalocated in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for architecting, governing, and advancing the enterprise cloud platform across CMS Energy. This role designs scalable, secure, and resilient infrastructure systems that align with business objectives, while also influencing cloud strategy across multiple departments.



Principal Cloud Engineers serve as thought leaders who collaborate with Engineering, Architecture, Security, and Operations teams to define best practices, promote platform reusability, and guide critical technical decisions. They act as accelerators by enabling teams through tooling, automation, mentorship, and strategic technical direction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Develop and enforce cloud governance models that align with security, compliance, and operational standards.


  • Partner with business stakeholders and product teams to ensure cloud solutions support longterm strategic goals.


  • Mentor senior engineers and promote architectural excellence, ensuring teams balance agility with sustainability.


  • Participate in enterprise architecture reviews to ensure consistency, quality, and alignment across solutions.


  • Lead the architecture and design of enterprise-scale infrastructure across hybrid and multi-cloud environments (Azure, AWS, GCP, on-premises).


  • Define reusable platform patterns and reference architectures to drive self-service, scalability, and secure-by-default design.


  • Promote adoption of cloud-native technologies including container orchestration, serverless computing, service meshes, and event-driven architectures.


  • Lead complex migration and transformation initiatives such as datacenter exits, cloud modernization, and cross-cloud integrations.


  • Guide investment in tools and platforms such as IaC pipelines, observability solutions, and platform engineering capabilities.


  • Operate cloud platforms by performing OS-level patching, enforcing security policies, and maintaining high availability through proactive monitoring and alerting.


  • Troubleshoot complex issues spanning infrastructure, networking, and application layers across multiple cloud platforms.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Security & Governance: Strong expertise in cloud security controls and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001), including audit readiness.


  • Cloud-Native Tools: Advanced experience with Kubernetes, service meshes, GitOps methodologies, and scalable CI/CD platforms.


  • Cross-Functional Influence: Ability to drive decisions across business, security, operations, and engineering functions.


  • Architecture & Design: Proven experience designing large-scale, resilient multi-cloud and hybrid infrastructure systems.


  • Platform Engineering: Deep understanding of building reusable infrastructure platforms, developer enablement tooling, and service catalogs.


  • Innovation & Leadership: Ability to evaluate emerging technologies and strategically integrate them into enterprise environments.


  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Broad knowledge of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS technologies-especially Azure-with additional experience in AWS and GCP preferred. Proficient in Linux and Windows operating systems.


  • Automation & DevOps: Hands-on experience with Terraform, Bicep, Azure DevOps, scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash), configuration management tools (Puppet), and backup/disaster recovery tools (CommVault, Zerto).


Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and seven (7+) years of experience in cloud architecture, DevOps, infrastructure automation, or platform engineering

    • [OR] Associate's degree and nine (9+) years of experience in cloud architecture, DevOps, infrastructure automation, or platform engineering
    • [OR] High School Diploma/GED and eleven (11+) years of experience in cloud architecture, DevOps, infrastructure automation, or platform engineering





Additional Requirements:



  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to report to senior management, collaborate with peers, and mentor junior colleagues.
  • Current or former certification(s) in Windows Server, Linux, or Storage Arrays required.
