Job Summary

The incumbent will be part of the Finance Division, Health Information Management (HIM) Enterprise Services team and responsible for facilitating the availability of current, well-documented and legally sound medical records, fully compliant with all Joint Commission health information management standards, relevant federal/state laws, and UCDH policies pertaining to documentation in the medical record. As the lead coordinator or project manager of enterprise-wide multidisciplinary committees, work groups and/or task forces, must be able to meet with the decision makers, systems owners, and end users to define, develop and implement operational or project-based solutions to medical record-related issues and concerns. #CA-LA

The core areas of responsibility for this position entail serving as an institutional resource for issues related to medical record documentation and revenue integrity regulatory standards; reviewing medical record documentation for compliance with regulatory and legal requirements; updating/revising policies related to health information management laws and standards; assisting the department and organization to be continuously ready for unannounced surveys (The Joint Commission, CMS, CDPH, etc.), lending clinical knowledge and experience during surveys; responding to questions related to documentation within the EMR; and explaining criteria/report logic used to measure compliance-with regulatory standards. The position works closely with medical and nursing leadership in facilitating the development of EMR tools, workflows, and EMR training to ensure optimal documentation and integrity of the health record, as well as an understanding of the technical aspects of data collection, view, use, integration, and reporting (analytics), and actively supports the Health Information & Clinical Informatics Oversight Committee and its various subcommittees and workgroups.

This position will work with full independence and decision-making responsibility.

This position will exercise initiative, originality and independent judgment in applying established principles and
practices to new and unusual Issues and problems.

The position will play an active role in continually reviewing and assessing departmental and medical record documentation-related practices lo ensure continuous process improvement.

This position will act as a mentor to other analysts and project leads within the department, provide guidance and support with Legal Medical Record (LMR) Chart integrity, Content Regulatory Compliance, LMR and related Policies, EPIC Upgrades and Maintenance, Clinical Compliance Report Validation, and e-Discovery.

Responsible for e-discovery requests, be deposed and attend depositions and trials as the legal MKP (most knowledgeable person) pertaining to UC Davis Health electronic medical record and integrated technologies.

  • Current and active California RN License
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN)
  • Extensive knowledge of nursing workflows and documentation gained from 5+ years' work experience as an RN (Combination of clinical and non- clinical RN experience acceptable)
  • RN with 5+ years of experience or Combination of clinical and non-clinical RN experience.
  • Work experience in academic institutions or large integrated health system experience.
  • Experience working with HIM applications, Epic applications, or other system implementation teams for complex projects or healthcare field related application development.
  • Excellent analytical skills to develop and/or comprehend complex clinical documentation and fiscal information.
  • Ability to absorb information to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Skilled in working in a collaborative environment, and experience with team leadership/direction.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, organize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create and manage time schedules, multiple activities and priorities and maintain productivity.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable and effective in opening channels of communication, listening to others and cultivating a healthy, productive, and ongoing dialogue.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EPIC Certified in 1 or more applications
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Health Informatics, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or similar degree.
  • Experience in using EPIC EMR for clinical documentation.
  • Work experience in academic institution or large integrated health system experience.
  • Experience in working with EPIC applications, HIM applications, or other system implementation teams for complex projects and/or application development.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
