Job Title HR Manager Reports to VP of Operations/Chief of Staff FLSA Status Exempt Position Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a national association of more than 135 organizations, representing a broad array of groups committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable, just, and free society. Job Purpose The HR Manager serves as a key member of the Operations team, providing leadership and expertise across core human resources functions, including talent acquisition, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, compliance, benefits administration, and payroll. The HR Manager contributes to a positive, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture by advising staff and managers, developing and maintaining HR practices and policies, and ensuring legal and regulatory compliance. Duties and Responsibilities • Oversee end-to-end recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes to ensure an equitable and consistent candidate and employee experience. • Manage employee relations matters, providing coaching, conflict resolution support, and policy guidance to staff and managers. • Administer and process payroll accurately and on schedule, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. • Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook; ensure organization wide understanding and consistent application. • Coordinate performance management processes, including goal setting, check-ins, performance evaluations, and improvement plans. • Support compensation reviews and ensure internal equity in partnership with leadership. • Administer employee benefits programs and collaborate with external vendors to resolve issues and provide staff support. • Manage and maintain HRIS data and records, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and effective reporting. • Support organizational learning, development, and DEIA initiatives to strengthen engagement and employee growth. • Foster a positive and inclusive staff culture by coordinating staff retreats, planning staff-wide events, and developing activities that enhance morale, teamwork, and engagement. • Ensure compliance with employment laws, internal controls, and HR best practices. Required Qualifications • 5+ years of experience • Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience • Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices • Experience with payroll processing • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and judgment • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills • Experience with HRIS platforms. BambooHR experience preferred but not required Preferred Qualifications • Experience working in a nonprofit or mission driven organization • Experience supporting multistate payroll and compliance • Familiarity with unionized workplaces and benefit administration in both union and leadership staff contexts • Experience with change management or organizational development initiatives • HR certification (PHR, SHRMCP) preferred but not required Compensation and Benefits The starting annual salary range for this position is $77,500-$85,925. We offer a comprehensive and generous benefits program, including: Insurance We offer medical, dental, and vision benefits, with 100% of employee premiums paid for by AFJ. Short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance are provided at no cost to employees. AFJ also provides access to an employee assistance program for physical and mental well-being. Retirement Save for retirement with our 401K plan with a 5% employer contribution. Time Off AFJ offers a generous time off policy, including vacation leave, sick leave, personal days, and bereavement leave. AFJ observes 12 holidays throughout the year and additionally closes between December 24 and January 1. • Year 1 (0-12 months): Eleven (11) days of vacation each year (3.66 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 17 days • Year 2-4: Sixteen (16) days of vacation each year (5.33 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 24 days • Year 4+: Twenty-One (21 days) of vacation each year (7.0 hours per pay period), with a maximum accrual cap of 32 days Parental Leave Eligible employees may take up to sixteen (16) total weeks of leave in connection with the birth of the employee's child, placement of a child with the employee for adoption, or gaining of a foster child. AFJ/AFJ Action provides eligible employees with twelve (12) weeks of fully paid parental leave for purposes of bonding with a new baby following a birth or placement of a child for adoption or gaining of a foster child. Travel requirements: • For employees located outside of Washington, DC or working remotely in the DC area, travel to events such as staff retreats, and other work meetings will be required approximately one to four times per year. Schedule: • Full-time • Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. • Some occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
