The GATX summer intern program is a paid 13-week internship from May - August. The CI Intern will support continuous improvement efforts at GATX's largest railcar repair facility (Hearne, TX). This role is tailored to students interested in a career focused on Lean and Six Sigma process improvement, root cause analysis, 5S, and project management. Key efforts will focus on improving the safety, quality, cycle time, and cost reduction of critical business processes at the repair facility.



Responsibilities

    Assist and coach Daily Visual Management in the facility in the context of GATX's "SQDC" management framework. Support/coach/lead DM efforts across all work centers and all levels within the repair facility.
  • Collaborate in deployment and education towards a relentless problem-solving culture to achieve goals within the Operations organization by using all problem-solving methods, including DMAIC and A3 problem solving:
    • Plan and conduct problem-solving sessions and workshops
    • Facilitate and empower teams to engage in local problem-solving
    • Assist in Strategy Deployment, Process Mapping, and Standard Work efforts
  • Facilitate Kaizen/Blitz activities to drive change with sustainable results
    • Ensure cross functional involvement
    • Develop ownership for results
    • Baseline and track/report realized improvements
    • Ensure improvements have clearly defined sustainment plans
  • Contribute to special projects and implementation of strategic initiatives for the Operations group, as identified through goal deployment
    • Use the appropriate Lean / Six Sigma tools as required
    • Collaborate with cross functional teams which will include Mechanical Repair, Finishing, Inspection, and other work centers in the shop, as well as corporate functions such as Engineering and Quality


Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a bachelors or masters degree in Industrial Engineering, Business, or Operations Management
  • Experience in data analytics, process improvement, lean six sigma, project management, and coaching
  • Skillset of influencing and persuading without having direct authority
  • Eagerness to learn the railcar repair industry, GATX business model, and all departmental functions for professional exposure purposes
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Interpersonal savvy in change management and conflict resolution
  • The ability to coach and inspire Supervisors, Plant Managers and staff personnel at all levels with humility
  • Systems thinking approach
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Root cause identification
  • Planning and organization
  • Microsoft Excel and Visio
  • Power BI experience is a plus
  • CAD experience is a plus

Other:

  • This position requires presence on the shop floor in an industrial environment and the ability to climb on top of and get underneath railcars
