Overview:

The Fusion Energy Division (FED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a highly experienced Mechanical Engineer in the Remote Systems Group as a casual employee. Remote Systems specializes in the development of advanced remote processes, handling systems, and robotics for inaccessible environments in nuclear fission, fusion, and particle accelerator applications. We seek individuals with technical and analytical skills who are comfortable working across disciplines to contribute and lead in fast paced, team-oriented environment. Successful candidates will have a clear enthusiasm for R&D. You will perform research in robotics and mechanical systems for remote and hazardous environments.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work individually and/or as part of a team and lead from knowledge and experience.
  • Create parts, assemblies, and technical drawings using SolidWorks and/or Creo to a detailed level.
  • Analyze variety of engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and finite element analysis packages to prove designs meet established design standards. Provide hand calculations to support the design.
  • Prepare schedules, cost estimates, status updates, and performance reports for responsible projects.
  • Develop control algorithms for actuating and controlling mechanical systems.
  • Accountable for compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality in the workplace and lab space.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering disciplines and 7+ years of working experience in a related field. Candidates with a Doctoral degree are encouraged to apply as well.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical systems, machine design, and system integration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the development and application of engineering methods to solve real-world problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team of differing levels of personnel to reach a common goal.
  • Demonstrated ability to write technical papers, reports, design and analysis calculations, and/or system design requirement documents.
  • Ability to perform research in the area of robotics and mechanical systems for remote and hazardous environments.
  • Ability to work in team environment while excelling in your own research.
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers and program managers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in the nuclear field, accelerator facility, particularly in the design and development of systems for inaccessible remote environments where radiation is present.
  • Experience in design, analysis, and optimization, of mechanical components.
  • Experience analyzinga variety of complex engineering problems using both traditional analytical methods and finite element analysis programs such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or CosmosWorks.
  • Experience in hardware system integration (LabView, PLC programming, etc.) to control a mechanical system.
  • Familiarity with computer programming languages like C, C++, Python, or MATLAB.

This position is classified as Casual and does not guarantee full-time employment.
