About the College

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. Programmatically, Cornell Cooperative Extension connects the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) with 55 off-campus Associations, Integrated Pest Management, New York State Sea Grant, Area Specialists, and CCE New York City.

The Northwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team was formed to work with these industries. The mission of this extension team is to provide high-quality educational programs that address the needs of established dairy, livestock, and field crop producers, and beginning farmers in Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Livingston, Wyoming, Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Seneca and Yates Counties.

What We Need

Deliver educational programs that address producer identified needs and opportunities with an emphasis on small farms and livestock production along with business analysis for livestock producers, beginning farmers and other industry clientele. The program will include but is not limited to: diverse production practices (i.e., grass, grain finishing, etc.), market readiness (i.e., carcass quality/consistency), record keeping and business analysis; economics of production; financial management, risk management, and business planning. Plan and implement educational programs utilizing a variety of methods. Deliver one-on-one consultations with key producers and industry partners related to program initiatives and available resources.

Provide commercial producers and industry with a framework to analyze production and management alternatives and to maximize profit opportunities based on emerging best-management practices. Work with farms to analyze management strategies to expand production and profitability. Conduct appropriate applied research and field demonstrations with both regional and statewide implications in production and economics of commercial livestock production as an educational outreach strategy. Support efforts in planning and implementing of regional and statewide events and conferences directly related to Cornell, Cooperative Extension or related collaborators.

Prepare quarterly reports, impact statements, and yearly success stories on program progress and accomplishments. Communicate evaluation results, findings, and make recommendations to program partners and funders. Support Cornell University and Cooperative Extension system-wide initiatives through participation in program work teams, ad-hoc committees and advisory groups. Participate in professional development opportunities, conferences and workshops appropriate to program and personal skill enhancement.

This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will be located in Western New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in Animal Science or closely associated fields and 2+ years of relevant work experience in agribusiness, production agriculture, Cooperative Extension, or closely related fields or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fundamental competence utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Internet and Social Media).

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills.

  • Proven organizational and time-management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings; working effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

  • Creativity, energy, motivation and positive enthusiasm.

  • Familiarity with production evaluation software.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, theory, and research in commercial livestock production and business management.

  • Ability to define, conduct and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, including having reliable transportation or having and maintaining a valid New York State driver's license.

  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Master Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in Animal Science or closely associated fields

  • Knowledge and experience in current and emerging issues and production practices of dairy, field crops and livestock farm businesses.

  • Successful experience obtaining new funding including grants and industry support.

  • Familiarity with FINPACK, Center for Farm Financial Management, University of Minnesota.

  • Appreciation of agriculture as a business and as a lifestyle.

  • Knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, and operation of an informal education system such as Cornell Cooperative Extension.
