The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology. Founded in 1965, the Department comprises 68 primary faculty members (including those based in the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Vascular Medicine Institute, and Organ Pathobiology and Therapeutics Institute) and 27 secondary faculty members, with research programs spanning areas of contemporary pharmacology, including cancer biology, cardiovascular biology, cell and organ system pharmacology, drug discovery, neuropharmacology, signal transduction, and structural pharmacology. The Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology is a nationally recognized leader in biomedical research and was ranked 4th nationally among all pharmacology departments in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in 2024, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. In addition to its exceptional research enterprise, the Department has a strong commitment to training graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, physicians, and undergraduates. Department faculty lead the PhD Program in Molecular Pharmacology, supported by an NIH T32 training grant now in its 26th year of funding. The incoming Chair will demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary training and to the mentorship and professional development of trainees and faculty at all career stages. The ideal candidate will hold an MD and/or PhD in pharmacology or a related field and will possess an international scholarly reputation, a passion for education and mentorship, strong administrative and leadership skills, a track record in philanthropy, and an entrepreneurial spirit. The incoming Chair will serve as a collaborative bridge builder, facilitating communication and partnership between basic science and clinical departments. The Chair will work collaboratively with departmental faculty, trainees, and staff and engage closely with University and School of Medicine leadership to advance a shared vision for research excellence, education, and institutional growth. The candidate’s experience must be commensurate with appointment as a tenured full Professor at the University of Pittsburgh.
