Position Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York State Psychiatric Institute seeks a candidate to serve the Associate Vice Chair of Inclusion and Belonging. The Department/NYSPI is committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment that values all staff and supports professional development. This leadership role will advance that commitment by guiding efforts to build a culture of inclusion and belonging across our clinical care, research and education missions.

This position is open to current faculty and sta within the Department of Psychiatry and/or NYSPI, with the expectation that the successful candidate will dedicate 50% of their professional eort to OFIPD responsibilities. The position will also be open to external applicants.

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for enhancing inclusion and belonging throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate in setting the strategic direction for the entire Organization, ensuring that principles of fairness and belonging permeate all aspects of the Organization.
  • Participate in the Executive Leadership Team, setting organization-wide processes and strategic priorities.


Key Responsibilites:

1. Leadership & Strategic Coordination



  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for inclusion and belonging for the Department of Psychiatry/NYSPI. This plan should include specic initiatives aimed at supporting a comprehensive and responsive workforce and enhancing opportunities for professional development.
  • Provide leadership to promote fairness, inclusion, and professional growth across the Department of Psychiatry/NYSPI.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership, HR, Faculty Aairs, and the Oce of Professionalism at CU, RFMH, and NYS to broadly incorporate inclusive principles into organizational activities
  • Empower and lead interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships across the organization to coordinate and build upon existing eorts in these areas.


2. OFIPD Program & Policy Development



  • Oversee a collective team of faculty, staff, and trainees working collaboratively to promote practices, inclusive engagement, and a supportive departmental culture across all missions
  • Revise policies and procedures to coordinate and expand eorts to support the recruitment and retention of a qualified workforce that meets the needs of the communities we serve.
  • Ensure that these policies and procedures reect best practices and are consistently applied across all levels of the Department/NYSPI.
  • Establish key metrics and goals related to a comprehensive faculty/sta recruitment, retention, compensation, advancement, and promotion.


3. Collaboration across Mission Areas



  • Partner with the Vice Chair of Research and other department research leaders to enhance eorts across the research mission (ranging from identifying procedures for fair allocation of research resources to identifying opportunities for under-resourced communities or those who have previously lacked professional or educational access to contribute to and benet from research).
  • Partner with Vice Chair for Clinical and Community Services and clinical leadership to support inclusion and belonging and implement anti-discrimination training to improve the quality of patient interactions and care.
  • Partner with the Vice Chair for Education to ensure that our training programs welcome and include all individuals to ensure the impact of our profession in the future.


4. Training & Professional Development



  • Increase knowledge and self-reection skills of all members of the department to promote humility and foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Advise on the training and educational needs of the department faculty, sta, and trainees related to inclusion and belonging.
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities, workshops, and seminars to enhance a culture of inclusion and belonging


Minimum Qualifications



  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a diverse professional community that values inclusion and belonging efforts.
  • Experience leading or significantly contributing to inclusion and belonging initiatives, policy development, training, mentorship, or community engagement.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working across diverse teams.


Preferred Qualifications



  • An advanced degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, Neuroscience, Education, or a related eld.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse community members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals of inclusion and belonging with specific expertise in this area, as evidenced through efforts in policy development and implementation, training, clinical work, research, and/or community engagement.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with efforts aimed at fostering inclusion and belonging in an academic or healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated expertise in administrating diverse teams leading and managing change with noted successes in setting and achieving goals with the team in large and complex organizations

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
