Position Summary
The 3D Laser Scanning Specialist supports Oceaneering's Inspection group by executing and leading advanced 3D laser scanning activities across offshore and onshore assets. The role ensures high-accuracy data collection, supports survey control tasks, and collaborates with engineering, fabrication, and quality teams to resolve technical challenges and maintain compliance with industry and company standards. The position also contributes to planning, mentoring junior staff, and continuous improvement within the survey discipline. This U.S.-based role (Broussard, LA or Houston, TX) requires frequent domestic and international travel to offshore and onshore sites.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform 3D laser scanning surveys in accordance with Oceaneering procedures and industry standards.
- Operate robotic and non-robotic Total Stations to support survey control.
- Lead daily reporting, documentation, and project updates.
- Mentor junior personnel and provide performance assessments.
- Troubleshoot survey equipment and field software issues.
- Manage 3DLS data in compliance with OII security requirements.
- Support project planning, estimates, and technical reviews.
- Conduct dimensional control surveys, point-cloud processing, and 3D modeling (as applicable).
- Ensure safe, efficient, and on-schedule execution of field tasks.
- Perform pre-mobilization checks, routine equipment maintenance, and firmware/software updates.
- Conduct field QA/QC to verify accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
- Prepare JSAs, Risk Assessments, and participate in HSE activities.
- Report incidents, hazards, and safety observations.
- Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as required to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Minimum 3 years of intensive 3D laser scanning experience, preferably in oil & gas or energy.
- Strong survey background; experience with terrestrial laser scanners and Total Stations.
- Knowledge of surveying principles including best-fit techniques, network adjustments, and datums.
- Familiarity with geomatics and point-cloud processing tools.
- Ability to interpret scopes of work and meet client deliverables.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of calibration procedures for scanning and survey sensors.
- Ability to work in fast-paced, physically demanding environments.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel extensively, including offshore and overseas.
- Valid driver's license: ability to obtain TWIC, passport, and required offshore certifications. Ability to travel and work in challenging environments, including offshore and remote locations for extensive periods of time.
DESIRED:
- Associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or related field; bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
- Valid offshore certifications. Availability to participate in an on-call rotation, including afterhours and weekend coverage
- Valid offshore certifications (e.g., BOSIET, HUET) preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position is considered ONSHORE / OFFSHORE WORK which is characterized as follows:
- Outdoors and indoors, day and night, as well as over/near water.
- Requires working on or near moving equipment and vibrating equipment.
- Frequently the humidity is above 90%, noise is over 85 decibels and the light are intense/glare.
- Potential exposure to open fire/flames/sparks.
- Constant exposure to airborne dust, fumes, and gases.
- Work surface is stable, height is elevated.

- Use of required PPE; participation in on call emergency response.
