Job Summary

Clinical ethics case consultation requests originate from clinicians, patients and families in all Corewell Health hospitals and ambulatory care clinic sites but primarily the intensive and critical care units. The incumbent will assist in recruiting, training and leading an all-volunteer staff of case consultants. The consultant staff will respond to all consult requests in a timely fashion and will seek to facilitate reduction in ethical tensions and conflicts, clarify confusions and to provide ethical counsel to requesting parties.

Essential Functions

  • Clinical Ethics
    * Provide expert ethics analysis on all case consultations at Corewell Health utilizing a HIPAA compliant web-based system
    * Conduct real time case consultations at all campuses areas as assigned including speaking and meeting with patients, family, clinical team and others.
    * Lead monitoring, oversight and record keeping of all active consult cases. Lead daily case review conference call.
    * Assist in aggregate case data collection, analysis and reporting.
    * Serve as core training faculty for Corewell Health system ethics consultants.
    * Participate as requested in clinical ethics educational offerings from the department of clinical ethics including information brochures, web site development, teleconferences, and webinars.
    * Contribute to strategic development, assessment and evaluation of high quality ethics consultation standards, practices and procedures throughout all Corewell Health service sites.
  • Organizational Ethics
    * Assist in review, revision, updating and developing of clinical ethics policies for Corewell Health.
    * Conduct ethical analyses on special topics as requested by Corewell Health offices and programs and assigned by the VPMA.
  • Administration
    * Participate on Complex Care Committee, and other relevant institutional committees that require or benefit from ethics presence and input.
    * Serve as acting Secretary to the Corporate Council on Clinical Ethics in absence of the permanent Secretary.
  • Education
    * Participate in clinical ethics teaching as assigned to Corewell Health staff, faculty, and trainees
    * Serve as professional ethics resource staff for administration, clinical and research and leadership, and identified community outreach as assigned.
  • Research
    * Conduct ongoing evaluation and research on quality metrics for ethics consultation services
    * Share service as ethics advisor to the corporate IRB. Mandatory IRB training is required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's Degree in ethics or related discipline such as law, medicine, nursing, philosophy, theology, social work or related field.
  • 5 years of relevant experience applied ethics, preferably in a healthcare setting with documented experience in consultation, teaching and policy development

Preferred

  • Doctorate in ethics or a related discipline such as law, medicine, nursing, philosophy, theology, social work, or a closely related field.
  • 3 years of relevant experience directing or managing an ethics program, ethics committee or consultation service.
  • CRT-Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certified (HEC-C) - American Society for Bioethics and Humanities American Society for Bioethics and Humanities 1 Year
