Overview
Utah State University's Center for Water Efficient Landscaping (CWEL) is a research and outreach center with a mission to improve the efficient use of water for landscape irrigation in the state of Utah. CWEL's specific goals include conducting research on water requirements of ornamental plants and turfgrasses, the effects of short and long-term drought on landscapes, the development and use of drought tolerant plants, and characterization of community-wide landscape water demand and use patterns.

The Center's outreach and education programs provide expertise and information to statewide Extension offices, the green industry, water purveyors/institutions, and the general public. CWEL achieves these goals through collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies as well as Utah's green industry. Responsibilities
  • Contribute to writing Extension fact sheets, creating educational videos and editing books and online materials to educate clientele groups about landscape water use efficiency.
  • Create and promote CWEL's content through social media, website, networking, presentations and booths at conferences. Work with Extension and University marketing to ensure that information is accessible, informative, and relevant. Create and order marketing materials for conferences and events.
  • Assist with scheduling Water Checks for Program participants during the summer months. Coordinate with Program administrator and employees.
  • Assist with creating flyers for webinar registration, emailing stakeholders and hosting practice sessions for education webinars.
  • Edits videos and upload them to YouTube and the CWEL website. Update webinar webpage and YouTube playlist.
  • Help organize events, tours and meetings as needed for professional groups (Utah Public Gardens, Field Days).
  • Coordinate with faculty to compile information and layout for CWEL annual report.
  • Assist faculty and graduate students with field research as needed including seeding, plant propagation, and data collection.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Six years of related work experience; or an associate degree/technical training plus four years of related work experience; or a bachelor's degree in a business field plus two years of related work experience is required.
  • Horticulture knowledge and interest or experience in low-water landscaping.
  • Presenting to practitioner groups on CWEL-related topics.
  • Experience with communicating and promoting programs through social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Web design experience including OU campus and basic HTML.
  • Teaching experience in horticulture and/or landscape design.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilites:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and be a self-starter.
  • Graphic design skills including Canva, Photoshop, InDesign or other design software.

Employees typically work in an office environment and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes. However, in certain instances employees are expected to work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. Employees could be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Employees may be seated for extended lengths of time and often use repetitive hand motions (such as typing). Bending and stooping is occasionally required. Ability to work outside in the elements on occasion to help with field and greenhouse research projects. Employees nearly continuously listen, hear, and talk.
