Idaho National Laboratory's Specific Manufacturing Capability facility is looking for a technical writer. This is an onsite position, and our team works a 4/10 schedule with every Friday off. You will report to the SMC Organizational Development Manager.

Essential Job Functions Responsibilities:

You will write and edit a variety of technical documents including presentations, reports, plans, and procedures related to operations, system specifications, or reviews; prepare (either by writing or editing) information for inclusion in documentation; coordinate review cycles and resolve concerns; identify the need for and direct the work of support personnel; and coordinate all facets of the document production process.

You will:

* Compile, narratively organize, and accurately edit scientific and technical publications, operational and safety procedures, and other documents using input from subject-matter experts and team members.

* Perform formatting, technical editing, and writing tasks for assigned programs. Documents include procedures, proposals, publications, and other products.

* Oversee preparation and production of work products, interfacing as necessary to ensure professional quality and adherence to schedule.

* Advise or instruct customers regarding standard usage, style, format, methods, and document preparation and production.

* Define scope and coordinate with technical management and staff to determine depth and detail of work. Consult with management and users regarding special documentation needs.

* Perform work within established guidelines, templates, and standards that are varied and may be complex in nature. Use guidelines, templates, and standards independently and effectively with acuity for the slightest grammatical, stylistic, or formatting detail.

* Perform work using a wide range of information technology applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, graphics, layout, spreadsheets).

* Analyze documentation requirements for staff and engineers. Influence publication process improvements through personable and helpful interactions with researchers and other staff.

* Assist with work acceptance coordination and development activities.

* Complete data entry into appropriate systems to enable the proper configuration management, recordkeeping practices, and export control, classification, and communication reviews necessary to release information within and external to the laboratory.

* Work with teams to complete projects.

* Maintain responsibility for adhering to the requirements established in all procedures and standards that relate to the creation and modification of company documentation.

* Represent the organization within other departments to resolve issues associated with writing and editing.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

* Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in English, technical communication, or other related degree.

* Level 2-Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of relevant experience OR advanced degree plus 0 years of relevant experience.

* Level 3-Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of relevant experience OR advanced degree plus 2 years of relevant experience.

* Must be able to manage several projects at once, work independently, and demonstrate strong analytical and common-sense thinking.

* Must demonstrate flexibility and be able to prioritize work under pressure to meet deadlines.

* Must have excellent relationship management to diplomatically navigate interfaces with administrative, program, project managers, and staff.

* Must have strong organizational capabilities and the ability to create and work in a team environment.

* Must have experience with business computer technology (e.g., Windows, email, Microsoft Office products).

* This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting, and the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
