Position Summary

The Staff Therapist I position involves direct service to UIC students (brief counseling/psychotherapy, group therapy, and outreach programming), consultation and liaison to faculty/staff/students, and the participation in supervision and training of Counseling Center postdocs, interns, and externs. This position will have important liaison responsibilities in service of our Black, African-American, Latine, Asian, international, and other underrepresented UIC students and campus communities. This involves continuing and expanding the work of: 1) fostering connections for students to mental health services and supports, 2) creating new spaces and programs that support mental health and well-being, and 3) assisting with training and education on mental health topics. The Counseling Center is a unit of the Office of Student Health and Wellbeing which includes Campus Recreation, the Wellness Center, and Public Health Initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct psychological and career counseling, including assessment, crisis intervention, and case management services for students' personal, social, vocational and/or educational concerns consistent with Center policies and procedures.
  • Perform consultation and refer students and their family members, staff, and faculty, as appropriate for mental health, medically-based, or adjunctive services within the university or the community.
  • Utilize and contribute to research/data collection for the improvement of student functioning, Center's training programs and services.
  • Provide educational/developmental outreach programming for students and university community to improve coping and problem-solving strategies and to contribute to a supportive and enhancing learning environment.
  • Supervise and train unlicensed clinical staff, post docs, and pre-doctoral trainees with regard to diagnostic interviewing/assessment, evaluations, outreach and treatment of Counseling Center clients. Opportunities to supervise social work trainees may be possible in the future.
  • Supervise work as assigned to unlicensed clinical staff, post docs, and pre-doctoral trainees to ensure that service and training objectives are met. Help select and train, develop, and manage said persons to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  • Maintain ethical, legal, organizational standards, and multicultural competency in all training, service, and research activities.
  • Position requires occasional evening hours and weekend duties; Does not require after-hour oncall responsibilities.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    • A Master's or advanced degree in psychology, counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a related field.
    • Eligible for licensure in the state of Illinois at the highest level in the field (Psychologist, LCPC, LCSW, or LMFT ONLY) prior to start date (will be required to obtain IL license within six months of hire). LPC and LSW licenses do NOT meet minimum qualifications and will NOT be considered for employment.
    • Demonstrated experience and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and interdisciplinary team.
    • Experience with and commitment to working with clients from diverse backgrounds.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • A doctorate in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, social work, or a related field.
    • Fully licensed in the state of Illinois at the time of application to practice psychology as a Clinical Psychologist, LCPC, LCSW, or LMFT ONLY. LPC and LSW licenses do NOT meet minimum qualifications and will NOT be considered for employment.
    • One or more years of post-graduate experience in a university counseling center, and/or supervision of Master's and/or doctoral level psychology graduate students.
    • Demonstrated understanding and experience with college student developmental theory from undergraduate through graduate/professional levels.
    • Demonstrated experience and facility with an electronic records management system, databases, and other technology to aid in the provision of clinical services and administration.
    • Ability to conduct counseling in a language other than English.
