ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Network Services is responsible for delivering highly available, robust data communications to support BNL research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Working closely with users and other IT organizations across the Laboratory, Network Services provides reliable, high-performance, and secure networking solutions that meet the diverse needs of BNL's scientific and operational community. In addition, Network Services underpins many of the Laboratory's critical campus services, including telephony, security, safety, and monitoring systems.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

As a Senior Data Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining a campus-wide cable plant, including copper and fiber-optic cabling, structured wiring, and related field work. This role includes responding to incidents and service requests in support of the network and telephony infrastructure.

You will work closely with the Network Engineering team to troubleshoot physical-layer issues, assist with network installations, and manage assigned projects to ensure reliable and efficient service delivery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and document diverse types of structured wiring such as Cat 5e, 6, 6a, and fiber optic cable.
  • Install and maintain underground and horizontal/riser cable infrastructure to include data racks, patch panels, J-Hooks, support rings, and cable tray.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain Telecom and Network equipment.
  • Assist engineering and other BNL staff with all aspects of the cable plant.
  • Structured wire distribution and equipment rack wiring.
  • Work independently, or with other technicians to complete work orders.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years' work experience or
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years' experience or
    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or
    • 8 years relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of telecom systems and network equipment.
  • Equipment rack assembly and wiring.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of all types of wiring test equipment, including OTDRs and Cat 5e, 6, 6a test and certification equipment.
  • Works well with team members.
  • Can maintain high expectations of customer satisfaction
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid state driver's license

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years' work experience or
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years' experience or
    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or
    • 10 years relevant work experience
  • Industry-related courses and certifications such as BICSI, current or past.
  • Fiber optic installer certification training.
  • OTDR-certified training.
  • Copper testing, and certification training.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be able to work with hand tools, climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in different environments including inside, outside, confined spaces, new construction, and existing work environments.
  • Color Vision: Ability to decipher the various wiring color codes.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $79100 -136800 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
