United States, Massachusetts, Waltham

About us

Superpowered. Meaningful work. Human impact. A story we're proud to tell. This is what matters to us at National Grid. In a world of complexity and unanswered questions, there is one thing we're certain about: The power of our people.

National Grid is hiring a Lead Business Analyst, Business Analysis for a hybrid role local to Waltham, Massachusetts.

Job Purpose

The electric utility industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the growth of distributed energy resources, accelerating load growth, and rising customer expectations. Traditional utility operating models are evolving rapidly, creating opportunities to reimagine how the distribution grid is planned, operated, and optimized.

Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) will be a critical platform in enabling this future, supporting our commitments to safety, reliability, and operational excellence. To unlock the full value of DERMS, we must ensure our data, processes, and integrations are ready to support new ways of operating the grid.

In this role, you will help lead the evolution of how Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) data come together to support our Distribution System Operator (DSO) operating model. You will work to connect historically siloed data, integrate new technologies, and help develop the processes and data foundations needed for tomorrow's operational capabilities.

This role is truly greenfield. We expect the scope, tools, and ways of working to evolve as the program matures. The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating ambiguity, learning as they go, and helping shape a role that blends the stability of a long-established utility with the mindset and energy of a startup.

Key Accountabilities

* Conduct in-depth analysis of existing data structures, systems, and business processes across operational and distribution-related domains, with a focus on distributed generation and the future electric distribution system.
* Assess current-state ("as-is") data and processes and help design data structures that are fit-for-purpose for future grid operations.
* Develop clear, concise, and well-structured materials to communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to technical, operational, and executive audiences.
* Monitor, assess, and help improve the quality and health of operational data across the Distribution ecosystem.
* Build strong working relationships with internal partners across operations, IT, analytics, and engineering to deliver shared objectives and generate new insights.
* Contribute to data analysis, integration, and modeling efforts, particularly in support of the distribution network model.
* Support initiatives that advance the DSO operating model and contribute to measurable performance outcomes.
* Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support evolving program goals and priorities.

Qualifications

We recognize that people bring experience in different ways. If you don't meet every requirement below but believe you can excel in this role, we encourage you to apply.
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
* Experience working in an operational or technical environment; experience with field data, communications systems, or SCADA environments is a plus.
* Knowledge of electric distribution systems, including data acquisition, system architecture, and underlying infrastructure.
* Hands-on experience working with operational technology (OT) systems, particularly SCADA; experience with OSI Monarch products is highly desirable but not required.
* Familiarity with data models used in electric transmission and/or distribution systems.
* Demonstrated ability to take initiative, define work plans, and deliver high-quality outcomes in evolving environments.
* Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
* Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for technical peers, operational partners, and executive leaders.
* Familiarity with RTOs, utility regulatory frameworks, or the distributed generation industry is beneficial but not required.
